Watching storm game its a penaltyathon.
Is it ruining the game ,i think so, too many .blowing the pea out of the whistle.
Players milking more now.knowing they will get one.
Interesting to see others thoughts.
The souths dogs game was boring.

I expect this thread just like social media will be full of dramatic hot takes but it has been a long long time coming.

I'd like to point out the best part, out of all those penalties, maybe only 3 or so were even contentious? We got consistency and now people will throw a fit

People will say "but it's killing the game", but it will ultimately save it. Players and coaches need refereeing like this until it sinks in.

Is it good to watch? Nope. But I'll take some weeks of this gladly if it puts a stop to the slow decline of rugby league that's happened in recent years with no respect for referees and soft decisions, not to mention the exploitation that Storm are apparently no longer getting away with

Deal with it. Direct the anger to the dickheads that keep breaking the rules. f**k the flow of the game right now, this shit needs to happen

The only thing I hope for going forward is more sin bins next time. I'll give benefit of the doubt that they didn't bin much tonight purely because tonight was the statement being made and they knew people wouldn't expect it. Now that it's out there, bins should come if that many penalties come again.

Yep x 10000

You want less penalties, stop breaking the God damn rules.

As long as it the remains consistent its about time they kept the teams onside, stop wrestling, stop laying on the tackled player, stop the flop.

Was good to see the Storm cop it.

Absolutely. Take a read through the ‘Penalty blitz’ thread in the main forum. Plenty of Daily Telegraph readers & Ch9 watchers in there. You’d think the game was on its last legs!

What’s ironic is that the commentators(along with the fans)have been screaming for the end of the wrestle, slow ruck, better play the ball and now that something is being done about it they sh*t the bed over. If you get the chance watch the press conference with Bellamy. He pinned the loss squarely on how his team played, nothing to do with the refs. He handled it really well.
The message will start to sink in and we should get a better game as a result. Painful to start with but it will be worth it.

It definitely was hard to watch those games yesterday but you've hit the nail on the head LG. I also applaud Bellamy for actually blaming his players and not the refs who are enforcing the actual rules. It was Flanno and the commentators squarely blaming the refs for what Greenburg insisted needed to change. Good coaches will adapt. I think eventually it'll lead to better attacking games and fast play. I'll probably get crucified for saying this....

the ref involement/influence is at ridiculous levels, few commentators are not professional enough to be consistently unbiased.. Sterlo and Wally are two who I think can remain close to neutral. One I find hard to endure is Gus. He can be amazing to listen to, even funny, however I've said it many times before cant stand when he refs the dragons, complete d$$khead.

I Normally enjoy listening to Blocker but he was completely biased calling the dogs v Souths game, he must have a soft spot for the doggies. Even ignoring the commentary, the game itself was a debarcle, the penalties killed it for me. Every time a player drops a ball in a tackle, or gets an arm within cooee of his head he puts on an academy performance and gets a penalty. It sounds like it's not gunna be worth watching Melb v scumulla. The only good thing from the doggies game was that they got their just deserve's in the end , someone really needed to shove the refs whistle up the refs $&@&, I mean seriously it was a joke.

It worries me what we will get in the Dagons game today. And look I'm not totally against the tough stance by the refs, but I hope the ref doesn't become the main player. The other big issue is the fact that the refs chooses only to penalise close to the try line, everywhere else on the field yesterday the sides didn't even make an attempt to get back on side and remain unpunished. Fingers crossed we get the rub of the green today, at the moment it is extremely hard going if it's against you

I watched Flanagan in his press conference and he was pretty much on the same page as Bellamy. He said that he has the refs at his teams training a couple of times a week so that tells me the players are either dumb or lazy if they aren’t heeding the advice given.
As for being crucified, apart from the agenda driven fools in the media a lot of fans are happy to see the crackdown take place and seem prepared for it to impact the game to get a better product.

Just loving the skills shown on the field without all the crap.

Some teams not dealing with playing within the rules, MEL "cough" MEL. Couldn't finish watching a full game.

Cry me a river however, they will adapt..

Flanagan did indeed say they had the refs at training but it obviously isn't changing much. He also stated that it wasn't enjoyable for the fans or the players which he said resulted in the frustration seen at the end of the game. Bellamy didn't go down that path. Short, sweet and to the point. His team had a lot of work to do in many areas.

Where did Flanno target the referees?

Ahh, just saw your last post. See what you mean now.

He is right, but it up to him and the players to stop the crap and follow the rules.

Same for all sides

Well then it’s on the players/coach to fix things. If their not capable of heeding the warning then it’s on them & they’ll struggle for sympathy especially when other teams pull themselves into line.

Spot on. The dirtier teams are going to have the harder time of it. Cheers

The place to fix this is on the training paddock not on the field. The refs aren't coaches and the players will look for a way around it ( milking, diving etc ) long before they listen to a ref.
The refs have done their bit, i.e. sounded a strong warning, but now it's time to take a breath, have a chat between the NRL, Refs and Coaches - preferably this week - and get things back on track, or on the new track.
There's no other answer, what happened last night can't keep happening without serious damage to the brand.

The good thing for us ( Saints I mean ) is that our discipline in these areas is pretty good, we haven't been coached to wrestle half as much or for as long as say the Storm or.....the Storm..and other teams and we let the opposition up to play the ball relatively fast compared to others. I've actually complained on these forums that we let them up too fast but now I'm thinking that can only be to our benefit as it won't be a big adjustment for us. We'll have to adjust our timing at the 10 metres but that shouldn't be a drama.

Last night had to happen but it can't happen for much longer.
