In my eyes, with all the scrutiny that Inglis and Folau put NSW's backs under, Benny is the perfect man for the job. He'd shut them down, and if you shut Inglis down you make your job that much easier.

Sorry, I'm just really bored, and I honestly believe Big Benny Smith should be the man to contain one of those stars.

Benny will play for Country this year...... it will come down to that game IMO for the centre role for Origin.

Deffinently a chance at Country but SOO is a not realistic at this stage.

Who knows. He'd be a dark horse but I wouldn't rule him out. With Lyon retiring and Gaz in France there's at least one centre spot open. Monaghan or Jennings might be the favourites but there's no way either is a shoe in at this stage. Apart from them there's no obvious choices so if neither are in form it will make things interesting. If Smith plays well over the first third of the season they'd at least be tossing his name about.

Unfortunatley the teams are picked (or penciled in) alot earlier then most people realise. After that its only injuries and suspensions that cause changes...

I would say most fringers (like Benny, Burty, Mateo etc) only have this weekend and MAYBE next to prove themselves.

before his run of injuries i thought ben was getting very close to origin selection and, if he gets back to that form, will be a contender. i think though that pommeroy from the sharks may be a front-runner since gasnier left and lyon retired from rep footy.

Of the 3 you mentioned, only Mateo is a 'fringe NSW candidate'.

Ben Smith was a fringe candidate a few years back before all his injuries. Sure, if he has a couple of monster games he could sneak into contention (selectors love big centres) - but they'd have to be MONSTER games!

I hope he plays well - but just wondering if anyone has seen his speed lying around? He seems to have misplaced it a few seasons ago...

I dont think anyone doubts his defensive capabilities.

He just needs to do more offensively before he'll get a look in.
