Penrith star Brian To’o has expressed remorse over a joke gone wrong after he made sexualised comments about several teammates and their partners on social media during the Panthers awards night earlier this week.

Penrith management sought an explanation from one of their biggest names on Thursday after To’o’s Instagram account was used to comment on several stories from the Panthers’ official account, in which he referenced players’ partners.

In response to Nathan Cleary being announced as the Merv Cartwright Medal winner for the club’s best and fairest on Tuesday night, To’o described Cleary as “The Fowler slayer”, in reference to Matildas forward and Cleary’s girlfriend Mary Fowler, along with a goat emoji (referencing the Greatest of All Time acronym) and a love heart,

Similar messages were added on a series of posts from the Penrith account.

Winger Tom Jenkins was referred to as “Jess Wrecker”, forward Matt Eisenhuth as “Holly destroyer” and veteran back-rower Scott Sorensen as “Elle smasher”.

The Panthers declined to comment when contacted as they arrived in Auckland ahead of Saturday’s sudden-death finals clash against the Warriors.

Club officials have spoken to To’o and say the matter will be taken seriously, with the NSW and Samoan flyer having acknowledged his public comments were in poor taste.

To’o has since explained to Panthers officials that he intended the comments as a joke. The 27-year-old rarely drinks and has told Panthers management he was sober while commenting live on the awards ceremony.

To’o’s comments have since disappeared from the social media site, given individual stories are only live for 24 hours.

The Daily Mail reported that several user comments on the since-expired posts expressed dismay at To’o’s comments.

The Panthers winger was involved in an embarrassing incident in 2022 when his best man and former teammate Jarome Luai gave an off-colour speech at his wedding, for which the Tigers star made a subsequent public apology.

To’o was rested for the last two weeks of Penrith’s regular season along with Liam Martin after the club prioritised managing their players’ workloads over an unlikely tilt at the top four

Would never of happened if Luai was in the chat. Penrith should tear up his contract immediately and he should go and reunite with Luai.

The past 2-3 years Penrith go up a gear come finals. They’ve generally been fairly slow starters to a season during that time as well. Also they have a slow Origin period. Ivan has generally mapped out their seasons fairly well, and has them hitting their stride during the right time.

Two unlucky GP losses against the top 2 teams in 8 days killed their top 4 chances. If they had won either of those games they probably don’t rest the whole team against the Dogs and finish top 4 again here. Now it’s just a question of whether they can win 3 “away” finals and a grand final in a row.

Penrith now paying 3.10 to win the grand final which is just behind the storm at 2.90

And to think not long ago they were paying 18

Hopefully Martin is ok

seriously should be $1.90. Sharks the only team with a hope of beating them

These teams hardly meet, seems like since the panthers have been good they only play sharks once a year in regular season

Its the best outcome for fans past a Raiders/Panthers grand final.

Brisbane v Sharks 3rd option. And if Melbourne make it then you might as well put on re-runs of Home and Away on grand final night.

I like the idea of a different team being put up for slaughter every year. It generally destroys the team for the year after, so every club should need to do their time on some form of rotation.

I mean, it’s not all the teams in the comp; you need to be good enough to make a GF. So that rules out the Titans, Chooks and Knights…

I sort of like the idea that you destroy the evils of the competition as well. Souths, Parramatta, Brisbane, Melbourne, you’ve sort of worked your way down the list of most horrible clubs. The Sharts may have leapfrogged the Roosters and Bulldogs in the pecking order but that’s a debate for another day, as I feel I may be letting bias get in the way of my professional judgement.

History will remember this Penrith side as the people’s club.
