IMO the whole sell out is a myth. If a band is considered professional, ie (musicians who derive their income from playing/recording music) They do this to make a living. At one point they achieve success, and as a result their writing style may or may not change, as they want to continue to have success. They are trying to appeal to their current base of fans, while wanting to attract new fans. Their core business is to sell music and derive an income from that.
