Has Josh Perry improved his discipline since 2001

He’s back all right – back to his usual form. Flops and drops… vintage Perry. We sure are getting value for money from the big fella -- $230,000 worth of penalties, lazy tackles, dropped balls and general slackness. He was lucky not to be penalised more today.

He was keen in attack, a facet of his game where he presumably thinks he can impress the right people. But, as I’ve said before, even if he made 10 metres every time he ran, if he gives away penalties then he is potentially costing us many more metres, by my reckoning 70 metres per penalty (25 metre kick for touch and 45 metres made by the opposition in the subsequent set of six). It would therefore take, on average, 21 hit ups to make up for his dirty play.

I’ve seen enough.

The thing is that he was playing for his future out there today - he had his target audience watching his every move. And while he did make some great metres and did some great things, he still looks to offload when clearly it isn't on, and still gives away stupid penalties.

The flop in the first half was a perfect example. Players have been caned for it all year, yet there he goes. The penalty leads to a try where he tried to take Sing out of play while he is going to score the try.

It is that stuff that is why he is not worth $230,000 a year. For that sort of money he should be a leader, the one setting an example. Instead, he is the exact opposite - the one who needs to be pulled into line every game.

Not worth $230,000 a year, not even worth the $170,000 we have offered him. He had one of his better games today, still gave away a penalty that led to a try, and as said was on the borderline with a few of his laying tactics. But as said better than usual.

Options (2) and (3) are effectively the same. He has not improved his defence VS his defence has not improved or become worse..... but that's really not an issue.

The real issue is that we're seriously competing with the Cowboys to secure the bloke for more than $200,000 a season. I agree with Tony -- he isn't even worth the $170,000 we're giving him already.

He tried hard, but just doesn't get it: penalties cost us metres, extra energy in defence, tries and then ultimately games. His inability to safely walk the fine line between being a disciplined but tough, no-nonsense prop and giving away stupid penalties makes his continued retention a concern.

$470,000 of this years salary cap.....
Well we cant blame the players for that. Its Conway and the Football Manager/s that sign every players contracts. When will you lot understand that?

I don't think anyone was suggesting that it was any of the players' fault. The point being that it was a mistake to sign both players on such chunky contracts..... as you point out.

Ultimately Perry needs to clean up his game before he will be worth $200,000 in my books.

I was impressed with Perry yesterday.....but like others have said he's playing for a contract..

BUT

Wasn't impressed with his comments towards the knights club.

Two weeks later, we're seeing a more disciplined Perry. Just the one penalty last night (same old story as marker), but in general he seems a lot more disciplined. Perhaps it was the haircut, perhaps someone gave him some tips. I hope someone gave him a real talking to. Whatever the cause, the result is, so far at least, a far more valuable player in our front row.

I'd still like to see him run harder (his returns from drop-outs last night were a bit teddybearish, worthy of a tiny teddy or two), but compared to the penalty-giving, ill-disciplined prop we had two weeks ago, I think we're seeing why the Knights are paying him more money from next season and beyond. Maintain that for a season, or even 20 odd games, and I'm happy to pay him $200,000. Not an incredible performance, but a solid display... well done Josh Perry. He's getting the message, it's now a matter of how long it lasts.

He has been excellent the past 3 weeks. In this kind of form he is in the top 10 props in the game. He is only in third gear too. He'll improve even more.

He still isnt doing what I expect from him, but I have no doubt next year he will do what I expect of him.

He should be coached to stop giving away stupid penalties. If bennett or stuart amoungst others were coaching him. Would he be so ill disiplined so far into his career?
