My thoughts on Perth recruitment:
For all the talk of a marquee player ect, I think it's probably the wrong approach. You'll just waste lots of time and cap space on someone who could be passed there best like Munster.
The best value is in those players waiting for their chance.
I'd swoop on Wishart, Pesent, Isenhuth, Garner ect.. there's loads of top quality players stuck behind first graders that don't get a crack. Panthers, Melbourne, Warriors are holding heaps of talent in reserve grade!
Build a squad of the best young up and coming players.

Very rarely does a club win a comp because they spent overs on a marquee player , Cronk was probably the last example.

This. From a storm perspective Perth would be smart to throw good money at Pezet. I know he’s unproven, but like Grant at that stage in his career you just know he’s got a long career in first grade ahead of him.

Look at the Dolphins.. didn't get a marquee- they're making thier own! Not only is it a 3rd of the price but they build a club identity.

Wouldn’t spend $2mill on Munster. id spend that money on wishart, pezant and bailey. Those 3 for $2mill would arguably be better value than Munster on his own at 32.

When I think of Perth Reds I think of the pictures of Mark Geyer in their jumper, I think Cameron Munster could provide the same sort of profile for the new Perth club, two, three years, that`s all they`ll need out of him. And he`ll be good.

The first few years of the bears are about being competitive but also building a brand, personality and presence in the Perth market. For that they need a few superstars and personalities to sell the team and sport.

I think a lot of players are setting up for the bears to bid for them

I think they won’t have trouble putting together a decentish side

Which includes some super league stars like Perth reds favourite player Mickey Lewis

Papps is another

Tino and d.Fifita are unsettled at the titans depending on who their new coach is

Then guys like Sandon smith is good and the chooks don’t really want him

Post 2027 I think a lot of Union players will want to try the nrl and the wages will be a lot higher than now

I see that argument and I get it but I don't think it's a good strategy long term.
The Titans did that...
They're absolute rubbish and are still struggling for an identity.

The identity of the Perth franchise won't come overnight and neither will success, if they rush it, it will fall away as quick as it came.

I think it doesn't matter who's in the jumper in the first year- they will get crowds and media. If they get the right talent, those players will become superstars in their own right and the best part is ,it will be as a Perth Bear !
Look at Katoa at the Dolphins, the Hammer, stone ect
They are the Dolphins , they are superstars as Dolphins. The identity and foundation of that club is rock solid.

There are a few players which are being sounded out that haven’t necessarily been reported on yet,

Garner; I expect him to be in negotiations for 2027 by Nov 1 this season. He will see out his contract (2026) at Panthers. There was talk of him potentially leaving at the end of this season and Panthers have shut that talk down much to the potential benefit of the Bears.

Cole; as above. Gardiner being key here and Panthers hierarchy also being key. Let’s be honest whilst Cole has had injuries that have slowed him down in the past he is a very good talent. He will eventually be surplus to Panthers halves stocks and would be an ideal 14 for Perth. His name has been floating around since Gardiner was appointed.

Campbell; Titans have 7 weeks to lock JC up for 27. Ezra Howe was a pretty decent influence on JC between 19-21 in lower grades through the GCJRL development system that Howe implemented in a streamline pathways into Titans. The Frizelle’s complete ownership of the Titans and their vision moving forward for the club will be key to JC staying or opening up contract talks with Bears.

Hetherington; this has been reported on last week. Him accepting a one year deal over a tabled two year deal tells the story.

Raiders Surplus Forwards; there are a bunch of young Raiders forwards who just won’t get game time in the NRL (sans multiple Injury/Suspensions to key 17 game day squad). I don’t have specific names on who these forwards are but don’t be surprised if 2 or 3 get snatched up.

Pezet/Fa’alogo; both have clauses in their current contracts to be able to negotiate with other clubs should Hughes/Papenhuyzen re-sign at Storm. This poses an interesting chat as both would likely walk into Bears starting 13 if they signed on.

Don’t underestimate Mal’s relationship with Bellamy, Sticky and Madge. Likewise, don’t underestimate Ezra’s relationship with key Titans players and Gardiner’s relationship with Panthers reserves players and Samoan international players.
