Peta Hiku

So it seems there hasn't been a lot of talk on this forum about the Dragons possibly picking up Peta Hiku. Thought i'd make a separate thread to start a discussion about possibly securing his services.

Massoud tweeted this earlier today:
@NRL_Dragons close to signing unwanted @SeaEagles star Peta Hiku to replace @Josh_Dugan at fullback

What are everyone's thoughts, is Hiku a good acquisition?

I'm still not convinced he is the fullback we need, but he is a quality player. He is 22, and still developing. Over the course of 26 rounds he will definitely be an asset. His versatility is what I find appealing.

Would be a welcome addition.

I agree mate, he would be a great addition to the squad. Fullback is his natural position as well.

Although, it looks like Souths are emerging as a favourite to sign him in a swap deal for Walker. That makes a lot more sense.

Exactly, if we throw more money for him we will get him.

This.

Strictly speaking, player swaps dont exists. If a player is released, it is not conditional that he go to a certain club. Ergo, if Manly release Hiku to sign Walker, Hiku can sign wherever he wants. Hopefully that is Saints.

It Has me beat why we need to pick up a guy to play fullback when we have bought Kurt Mann and don't forget we have Dufty waiting in the wings. if Dugan goes to centres more than likely with Aitken what happens with Mann? he wont oust Widdop or Marshall. total waste of money.
no wonder we have no money to chase a big name when when spend it on shit..

100% agree and rather we save the coin to target a top halfback to replace Benji from 2017 and beyond.

Hiku appears to be a likely Rabbitoh next year with Walker moving to Manly.
IMO
Mann looks likely for fullback in 2016
Aitken and Dugan in the centres
Mata'utia and Nightingale on the wings

In 2017, for SOO or for depth in 2016
Mann is an option at half
Dufty to fullback if ready
Faifai Loa steps onto the wing if he's not already there next year

so what you're saying is:

Mann is a better option at Fullback then Dugan?
Dugan a better option at centre then Peter M?
Peter M a better option then Fai fai loa as a specialist left winger?

im not too sure on the above, i think seems to be weakening a few positions to try and squeeze Mann in at fullback.

I think a centre pairing of Dugan and Peter M could be a good one. Plenty of size and speed there. And if KFFL locks down the left wing spot, we will have a genuine speedster and finisher we have been lacking. This may unfortunately squeeze out Aitken but he'll be the first picked when injuries and rep duties occur.

All this really depends on Mann making a good fist of FB. If he can provide the linking game from the back that Dugan couldn't, I'm almost certain we will score more points. But he needs to show us what he can do first. Trials will be crucial.

Really? Why not have greater depth? Dufty is at least a season away from serious FG exposure..

He definitely has proven himself more. I'd feel more comfortable with him taking the 1 jersey than Mann at this stage.

No ones seen Mann perform at fullback yet so hard to tell at this stage.

But more than comfortable having Hiku on board if he fits somewhere.

Kurt Mann is only 22 years old, played a total of zero NRL games in his preferred position of fullback....

But yeah let's write him off completely based on the fact we have absolutely no idea what we're talking about...
