You need capital cities and big areas to be represented in order to bring in revenue. You also need areas that produce players.

You need a combination of both.
Adelaide is one of the poorest places in Australia it’s worth nothing to advertisers

I dare say average incomes in regional nsw and qld would far exceed that dump

Don’t say silly things.

Sure Adelaide doesn’t compare to say Melbourne, Sydney, Perth or even Brisbane but don’t try and equate it to any other number of places in Australia.

average new 2 bedroom units in Wollongong or Gosford are like 650k. Newcastle is even higher

the northern rivers area is 750k

Adelaide is dero central

You do know that regional NSW and QLD is more than just Newcastle, Gosford and the Northern Rivers right? You would be including places in Western and Central NSW/QLD and I could assure you that the economic factors (earning potential, unemployment rate etc) would definitely be worse there than in Adelaide.

Also, according to this article houses are expensive in Adelaide as well

Other people in the world also don’t seem to think Adelaide is too bad to live in

Anyway, this is completely off topic now. I agree with you that Adelaide is definitely not the most pressing place in terms of expansion, however there are plenty of places in Australia that are worse than Adelaide.

I live in Wollongong, property prices are big here but that's because of close proximity to Sydney, I'd say Gosford is probably the same. The difference with Wollongong and Gosford is they are close to Sydney but are quieter and not as expensive as Sydney's East.

Never been to Adelaide so I can't compare but both Gosford and Wollongong can be pretty dero also. I think I'd put money down on Adelaide being nicer than both, lol.

During an interview last week, Mr V’Landys said the NRL would be negotiating the next rights to 2031 “pretty soon” and assured the game “we’ve got a few things up our sleeves”.

Oct 2nd
Senior sources at News Corp and Foxtel have confirmed that no additional payments will be made to the NRL under the existing contract, which is set to run until 2027.
Mr V’landys said the NRL was working to make the league’s product more valuable to rights holders. He is confident the code will be able to take advantage of the new financial benchmarks set by the AFL’s media deal when the next formal round of NRL rights negotiations begins.

honestly the bloke couldn't lie straight in bed!

Every city/town, even supposed really nice places, would have some noticeably poorer or dero parts.

I have been to Adelaide a few times. It’s a pretty standard place- quite nice or wealthy areas mixed in with some dero parts. It’s definitely not the worst or poorest place in Australia

It’s quite quiet, much quieter than Sydney or Melbourne. Reminded me of a bigger Newcastle to be fair. Good places to eat, not bad beaches and easy to get around.

Mr V’landys is also keenly aware of the need to make a deal that provides value to the league and its media partners.

“Our mantra is everyone has to be viable, and we want to make the broadcasters viable,” he said.

“So the one thing that nobody’s understanding here is the AFL is saying all these amounts, but what if something happens, and they don’t get them? Like if the businesses become unviable?

“So what our mantra is, yes, we want to maximise our rights fees and get more than what the AFL have got. But at the same time, we want to make sure that the business model is sustainable. Otherwise, all sports will suffer.”

We wont ask for more money because we don't know if TV can afford it.
Holy sweet baby jesus, is this really the man responsible for negotiating our tv deals?? They must be laughing their socks of at News ltd.

Foreign markets huh ?

but but isn’t afl a national competition ?

when most normal Australians use the word foreign we mean another country like say nz

not another state in Australia

lmao
Most normal Australians?? most normal Australians understand there are often more than one meaning attached to a word.

Most normal Australians are able to read a dictionary

foreign
/ (ˈfɒrɪn) /

adjective
of, involving, located in, or coming from another country, area, people, etc a foreign resident

dealing or concerned with another country, area, people, etca foreign office not pertinent or related matter foreign to the discussion

not familiar; strange
in an abnormal place or position foreign matter; foreign bodies

law outside the jurisdiction of a particular state; alien

If you consider yourself a “normal Australian” then our country is in a hell of a lot of trouble going forward.

I don’t think the game has ever been so mismanaged as it is now, and that’s saying something. Never before has the gap between AFL and NRL tv rights been so wide as it is now.

Not only that, Redcliffe got a licence that should have gone to Brisbane Firehawks or Jets. No players want to live in Redcliffe or Brisbane’s northern suburbs. They wanna live close to the city and where the action is. They’d be better off having the dolphins based on Sunshine Coast. At least the lifestyle may tempt a marque player to sign.

With no Munster coming in 2024 and Bennett ready to keel over any minute, this Dolphins is looking like the Gold Coast Giants all over again. Cellar dwellers never going anywhere. At least the Titans signed some talent when they started.

What a shambles PVL has made of the expansion team. Set them up to fail by rushing it and giving them no concessions, priority access to players or financial assistance to start up.

Compare it to AFL with Suns and GWS starting up. The dolphins are just gonna be cannon fodder.
