Hmmm, Toddy Greenberg would still be considering the impacts expansion would have on the game. Revisit in 2032 for another look, maybe.

The Great Man does it again. PVL gets it done. Delivers again and again.

Absolute legend.
Yeah but he's a bit of a merkin so nothing he does is right.....

The business world (including sport)is highly competitive & tough. If you are a docile, well meaning yes person , you won't get far.
That IMO is why Arthurson & Quayle were effective prior to SL.
And why PVL is so effective now. To run two major sports at the same time into huge profitability is no mean feat. Running the NRL during COVID early whilst jeered at by the media & AFL , was daring & successful. Now it looks like the Bears are out of hibernation ,thanks in part to him.

St Peter Vlandys, patron saint of Rugba League
It’s what you said

30 years to the day he’s brought back the 1995 arl comp which marks the high point of rugby league

Dolphins are a million times better than the crushers

And Perths bears way better than western reds

Now we can actually grow the game genuinely rather than go back to places we had before

And the return of a foundation club is great

Whats left from the SL War for him to undo?
Wests
Balmain
Illawarra
Adelaide
Hunter

The first two have potential as the Wests tigers IMO if they just sort out their front office, big fan base there ready to jump on the bandwagon. Plus I think some rationalisation of Sydney was needed. Balmain, Wests and Norths were those sacrifices.

Illawarra Steelers aren't coming back but the Dragons are based in Wollongong so there's that. Hopefully some stadium upgrades and growth in the area will see the Dragons slowly moving most of their games there with a couple of event games in Sydney.

Adelaide will come in the future but it's not really a festering SL wound like Souths, Brisbane 2, GC and Norths were.

Hunter isn't needed as we have the Knights. They will always be able to claim a little part of the Storm's 1999 premiership.

V’landys defended this bulging hotel portfolio at February’s annual meeting of the NRL. He told club CEOs the hotels had an annual return on invested capital of 6.5 per cent, according to two people present.
The NRL started disclosing “sales revenue” for the hotels on the 2024 balance sheet under “sundry income”. The report re-stated the 2023 sundry income line upwards by $2.7 million, suggesting this was its hotel revenue for that year. On that basis, the NRL received $8 million in hotel revenue for 2024.

I'll drink to that .Did the prior CEOs do anything about building up an asset base to cover future emergencies ?

No, they were too busy making money for News Corp.

.
50/50 I believe. Tv deals some questionable at times when compared to the fumblers.
Never forget Gallop bragging about the biggest deal in Oz sport .A short time late AFL trumped that.
The game's been around for ages well before News and the SL war. Very little to show for it asset wise , for a rainy day.

And when people pointed out to gallop afl for double he defended them saying they deserved it because they had more teams in metro areas

Or Dave smith who thought he got a cracker deal from nine by giving them an extra game then they sold it back to fox plus the streaming rights and annoyed Murdoch

To be fair to Dave Smith I believe he ended up getting $1.8b (not sure if it included NZ) over 5 years compared to AFL 2.5b of 6 years probably the closest we ever got per year to them

just checked didn’t include NZ ended up over $1.9b

The nswrl and arl were too busy propping up clubs on the brink of bankruptcy. The league wasn't very profitable back then. Packer also screwed them sideways a couple of times when it was tv deal time.

Just as they were on the cusp of making a move the stupid league war started.

It’s good to see the league almost get back to what it was in terms of stature and strength. I think the vision of PVL will help take the game to the next level - the pacific ambitions, the grand plan with super league, Australian expansion, and innovations like Vegas. It’s great to see, interest in the game is booming.

I just hope there’s some focus on junior participation as well as ensuring se qld remains a rugby league stronghold.

Agree there were clubs in trouble including the Sharks. That being said clubs relied heavily on leagues clubs via poker machine takings which were for sometime gold mines. No real consideration given to either purchasing a ground or putting % aside for football assets.
Packer could squeeze blood out of a year long dead dingo, ditto with cash.Ch10 stuffed things up with the TV deal also and Packer moved in with the deal of the Century.
Super League agree was a disaster putting the game back for at least a decade , plus the code being tied to having pay Murdoch 50% of profits.
From a selfish point of view the only good thing about SL was it saved my club. They at least in the 60/70s made an effort to have an asset with the ground & leagues club/stand.Well meaning people but the cost in doing so nearly brought the doors shut permanently.
