It may have been that way for the fans but the league itself wasn't making enough money.

At one stage there were no media companies bidding for the arl rights except channel 9. That's how tight it was back then. Inevitably, they got a pittance from Packer. The league was doing it tough.

.
Channel ten went bust and nine got the tv rights for peanuts

Then Arko and Quayle stupidly gave packer the pay tv rights for a dollar to keep Murdoch out of rugby league and we know what he did in response to that

Nine and Seven were in cahoots. The AFL was told in the late 80s that there was a secret arrangement that meant Nine wouldnt bid on the VFL and Seven wouldnt bid on the NSWRL - so 7 massively underbid the VFL for 3m a year despite a big national expansion in 1986 - there were no other bidders. The VFL then decided to give the rights to the ABC for 3/10ths of bugger all for 1986, Sevens ratings in Melbourne collapsed without the VFL and they came back with 6m a year in 1987,

Ten did bid on the NSWRL, had it, then couldnt afford to pay, and Nine picked it up for little more than a song.

I'm starting to believe ch10 will not be a serious bidder for FTA .Look at their el cheapo offerings.
They are owned by Paramount Global which is losing money . Who own CBS in the states whose rating are down the toilet. Paramount is trying to offload CBS in a merger with Skydance owned by the son of Ellison (Oracle).
CBS is being sued by Trump for $100Bn for allegedly manipulating a response from Kamala Haris(during a pre 2024 election interview) which was a word salad to make it look intelligent. Classified as election interference to favour a person/party.
Skydance is reluctant to do anything until the legal case with Trump is sorted.
IMO that leaves for the NRL 9, 7, Foxtel, streaming .

This time I'll take a stab with 9 retaining NRL FTA , 7 getting SOO & tests, Foxtel getting their usual lot plus an extra game, & streamers.
So basically robotic commentators with 9 and 7 will come up with decent commentators who make the game more enjoyable with a continuous flow of commentary .

without the bribe they arent getting a club. So it kind of does indirectly.
If Australian taxpayers money should be directly going to professional sports clubs making millions in profit is a different question.
I hope they all take it and invest it in some commercial property

Build long term assets cause this money won’t come regularly

And other football codes fear him
Yes he is feared by other codes for sure they all wish he was their CEO instead. And in his tenure he will oversee many achievements including making the nrl an economic powerhouse, expansion to a 20 team competition with conferences, increasing the international season, reviving the international game and bringing it back to top tier, expansion in the pacific, innovation in the game, new markets like US, bringing super league and nrl under the same umbrella, expansion in Europe and economic security, surpassing the afl etc

His achievements will make him the greatest administrator of the games history.
