It obviously beneficial to both codes not to go head to head. The old cliche ‘cutting off your nose to spit your face’ applies here.Scared, no.

looking at Lions & GWS crowds and more pertinently TV ratings it shows you how irrelevant a metric memberships are these days.
NRL has far more to lose this year, with TV rights negotiations ongoing. It obviously beneficial to both codes not to go head to head. The old cliche ‘cutting off your nose to spit your face’ applies here.
Possibly but their crowds are great for expansion teams. Lions and Swans that is. The way the AFL manipulated the comp to ensure they are in the finals shows the amount of commitment they have to those teams. It’s conceivable they have worked hard and gotten those numbers.Cause the membership figures are made up to try and seem like their expansion is working
60k members but rates 30k on TV, something doesn't add upDelusion.
Last time lions stopped making finals their crowds fell by 30 percent plusPossibly but their crowds are great for expansion teams. Lions and Swans that is. When the lions aren’t going well they are irrelevant in the Brisbane sporting scene. Even when they won the premiership last year Madge joining the Broncos dominated the sports talk after a day or twoLast time lions stopped making finals their crowds fell by 30 percent plus
Swans crowds are starting to look shaky too and the giants are lieing about theirs
Take the suns their games on free to air in qld get 17k watching
Lions maybe 70k?
Not sure about this timeslot. 30k people looking directly into the sun. Not a good slot for ratings either.I doubt the NRL is afraid or running away from the AFL. NRL is probably experimenting different timeslots like Sunday prelim final, because they have the next tv rights negotiations in mind.
So, according to your logic, we shouldn't have any afternoon games throughout the year, as thousands of fans on the eastern side of the ground look directly into the sun every Saturday/Sunday arvo during the NRL season. Not sure about this timeslot. 30k people looking directly into the sun. Not a good slot for ratings either.
This.Erm no. The fans have always wanted a return to Sunday afternoon finals in week 2 and 3.
This is a huge win and hopefully here to stay.
The same Channel 9 that wanted a Sunday night Origin for the great ratings, then demanded it back to Wednesday for the great ratings lolChannel 9 has always operated under the belief that you can never go broke by underestimating the intelligence of the average viewer. Trying to make us believe that the 6pm news on nine is some sort of flagship which everyone is waiting breathlessly for to commence exactly at 6pm. At one stage even leaving unfinished matches of rugby league to cross to the news iirc.
Also remember reading some braindead comment about how channel 9 had done some sort of research and decided if they dressed Fittler, Lockyer et al in trendy t shirts and jackets that the viewership would increase especially in terms of female demographics.
But my favourite classic channel 9 moment is without a doubt during an episode of Morning Breakfast show hosted by Carl Stefanovic a number of years ago when somebody called Clint Stanaway was talking about the SOO. At the end of his report he made a comment along the lines of let’s face it who really cares about Origin anyway. The cameras panned to Stefanovic who looked absolutely stunned. Stananaway had a look on his face as if to say what have I done. That’s channel 9 in a nutshell right there.This.
Ch9 are like the lowlife next-door neighbours that ask to borrow gardening tools from you, but never returns them.
Fri night/Sat night finals in weeks 2 & 3 were first tried in 2006, but the NRL quickly reverted the scheduling back to Sat night/Sunday the following year due to huge backlash from the fans and clubs.
In 2008, there was a lot of talk drummed up in the media claiming the fans wanted Sunday 3pm GFs back. Then-NRL CEO David Gallop compromised on a 5:20pm twilight kickoff for the remainder of the tv rights deal (very important to note: NO ONE asked or voted for it at the time. The debate was always over a 3pm or 7pm GF kickoff). However, in exchange for the shift in GF kickoff time, Ch9 DEMANDED weeks 2/3 finals were moved back to Friday night/Saturday night, hence getting an extra finals match in primetime.
In 2013, new tv rights deal commences and Ch9 get their beloved night GF back (shifted further back to 7:30pm, compared to 7pm during 2002-07), but weeks 2/3 finals still remain on Friday night/Saturday night for another 12 years. NRL should've had the balls to stand up to Ch9 and revert those finals back to Saturday night/Sunday. How they allowed Ch9 to dictate the scheduling for so long is a disgrace.
However, good news it that under V'landys/Abdo's leadership, bright days appear to be ahead. Over time, the ARLC have asserted their control: taking back full control of the draw (i.e. Ch9 no longer determines which games they want to televise each week), and now clear support from ARLC members about playing daytime finals matches this year. Although it's extremely doubtful a 3pm GF will ever return whilst GF day occurs during daylight savings, the best that fans can hope for from 2028 - when the new tv rights deal commences - is the twilight GF we had during 2008-12 (which would be a significant improvement on the current 7:30pm kickoff. Most of the game would still be played before sunset)
It is good though that Karl at 9 and Shirvo at 7 are both solid rugby league peopleBut my favourite classic channel 9 moment is without a doubt during an episode of Morning Breakfast show hosted by Carl Stefanovic a number of years ago when somebody called Clint Stanaway was talking about the SOO. And what about when Mat Thompson took over from Ray Warren as the main league caller. I distinctly remember reading that there was some arrangement in place where he wasn’t allowed to be shown on camera. Seriously. Was that an attempt to fool the dumb masses into thinking that Ray Warren was still commentating. And they would always use a recording of Ray Warrens voice to wrap up the telecast as in This has been another presentation of the National Nine Network. Is someone actually getting paid to make these decisions ?This.
