I'd like to get some competition in the FTA space. 9 are too complacent with league. What about if Seven got MNF or FNF or something like that maybe?

It obviously beneficial to both codes not to go head to head. The old cliche ‘cutting off your nose to spit your face’ applies here.
True. That's why AFL scheduled their Saturday prelim for 5.15 kick off and avoided the Raiders v. Sharks Saturday night game.

Unlikely

Ten may bid for the rights but they seem in love with fumble ball

Nine are looking to expand their league content with Stan getting the pay tv rights so I can’t see them losing everything

Not sure about this timeslot. 30k people looking directly into the sun. Not a good slot for ratings either.
NRL fans who go to afternoon games have no problem with vitamin D levels... AFL supporters all have vitamin D deficiency and generally suffer from bone pain, muscle weakness, fatigue, mood changes, hair loss and slow-healing wounds.

I vote for more daytime games.

But my favourite classic channel 9 moment is without a doubt during an episode of Morning Breakfast show hosted by Carl Stefanovic a number of years ago when somebody called Clint Stanaway was talking about the SOO. At the end of his report he made a comment along the lines of let’s face it who really cares about Origin anyway. The cameras panned to Stefanovic who looked absolutely stunned. Stananaway had a look on his face as if to say what have I done. That’s channel 9 in a nutshell right there.

Well, he's not wrong.

Channel 10 did a great job of covering league, giving it the respect it deserved. Too bad they hit hard times and those vultures at 9 came swooping in. Then Packer decided the public only needed to see 43 minutes of a game. Stupid cock.

Murdoch is a saint compared to him. That's how much of a low life he was.

Dazn will help the NRL get more international traction as well. Foxtel subscriptions have been built and are driven by the NRL and to a lesser extent the AFL. But the AFL has very little to no international interest. Unless you count that Frankensteinian game from years ago against the Irish hurlers with a soccer ball and soccer goal. That was seriously peak embarrassment.

And I distinctly remember watching it in the early days and the amateur Irish athletes used to run rings around the AFL stars before the latter adopted strong arm tactics to get on top.

Channel 9 has always operated under the belief that you can never go broke by underestimating the intelligence of the average viewer. Trying to make us believe that the 6pm news on nine is some sort of flagship which everyone is waiting breathlessly for to commence exactly at 6pm. At one stage even leaving unfinished matches of rugby league to cross to the news iirc.

Really? When did that happen?

The only thing close to that I recall was Panthers vs Tigers in Rd7, 2012.

Ch9 crammed in so many ads into the delayed broadcast of that game to the point where portions of the second half were edited out so that the broadcast could finish bang on 6pm🤣. What a joke! You could clearly see it was a cut-and-paste job by the editors (e.g. one moment you're watching play in the 52nd minute, and then the coverage abruptly jumped to play in the 56th minute etc), as Ch9 knew they were running over-time and broadcasting the full game would've gone way past 6pm. Furthermore, I still remember that day Ray Hadley (filling in for Ray Warren) crapping on non-stop about how Rabs had gone down to the Logies in Melbourne to represent the NRL Footy Show (which they won).

The more embarrassing moment for Wide World of Delayed Sports was the Australia vs New Zealand 2008 RLWC test match at the old SFS. Channel 9's (delayed) broadcast began at 8:30pm. That's where everything went downhill. I couldn't believe how many ads Ch9 sprinkled throughout the match, so much so to the point where the Fox Sports' replay (which began an hour later at 9:30pm) actually finished earlier than the Channel 9 broadcast! ROFL! Fox's coverage of the game finished at 11pm, whereas the full-time whistle occurred at close to 11:30pm on Channel 9.

Packer betraying the arl and showing super league games then making peace with Murdoch when they agreed to split shares in Foxtel

But Murdoch owned 50 percent of the game and kept it under his thumb

It's almost like they planned to screw league so they could make as much money from it as they could. Bring it to is knees then do whatever they wanted with it. The "war" was short term pain for very long term gain.

Then they spit them out. Only for pvl to rescue the code. Man I hope he screws them sideways.

Even though Murdoch and packer are gone I’d love to see Fox and nine both lose the rights

Hopefully one of them goes this time

The way the ratings are going and with expansion I can see a time when seven and ten are genuine bidders as it’s Australia’s number one product

Yeah, all those years when Ch9, News Ltd and 2GB essentially held the game to ransom and called the shots.

Before the ARLC was formed, the NRL (during David Gallop's tenure) were essentially negotiating with themselves when it came to the pay TV component of the tv rights deal. Massive conflict of interest re: News Ltd. The real market value for the pay TV component was never going to be realised, as it was always in the NRL's best interest to have Fox Sports pay as little as possible.

And don't get me started on 2GB. Complete, utter disgrace the NRL agreed to exclusive commerical radio rights for so many years.

In regards to amateur-hour rubbish from "the home of rugby league", the opening match of the 2013 NRL season between Roosters and Rabbitohs (which was SBW's comeback game in the NRL) is what takes the cake for me.

In the middle of Karl Stefanovic anchoring the pre-game coverage and Tom Waterhouse spruiking betting odds, pre-recorded samples of an interview with SBW were played THROUGHOUT THE GAME! 🤣

And now that I mention "the home of rugby league", who could forget that appalling promo Channel 9 constantly spruiked throughout 2012 in the lead up to the tv rights negotiations for 2013-17 (the "home of rugby league" promo with Ray Warren narrating)? Oh my....it made me want to pull my hair out everytime I saw it. I had the image in my mind of David Gyngell sitting in a boardroom meeting, playing that promo on a loop to all the NRL administrators in an attempt to convince them to award Ch9 the tv rights. Seriously, the promo looked like it was put together by a high school student during his lunch break! Too bad it's no longer on YouTube.

And what about when Mat Thompson took over from Ray Warren as the main league caller. I distinctly remember reading that there was some arrangement in place where he wasn’t allowed to be shown on camera. Seriously. Was that an attempt to fool the dumb masses into thinking that Ray Warren was still commentating. And they would always use a recording of Ray Warrens voice to wrap up the telecast as in This has been another presentation of the National Nine Network. Is someone actually getting paid to make these decisions ?

Or how about 100% Footy airing after 10pm for a long time then gradually changing to earlier timeslots like 9:45pm and now 8:45pm. It’s like they decided that it wouldn’t be popular before it was even aired therefore consigning it to a ridiculously late timeslot to begin with. Some anonymous suit at channel 9 must have superpowers to read people’s minds. Or just think that they know what the public wants.

Yes, Ch9 love treating their audience with contempt.

Last time Ch9 televised live cricket during the 2023 ODI World Cup, they did the exact same thing. At the end of the broadcast, they played audio of the late Richie Benaud saying "this has been another presentation from Nine's Wide World of Sports". First time I remember hearing it after Richie died - when Ch9 televised the 2015 Ashes tour - I remember thinking to myself "wow....I didn't know Richie's still alive!". But here it was........EIGHT YEARS LATER, still using the same pre-recorded audio.

Regarding 100% Footy, remember during the 2013-17 tv rights deal, where part of the agreement included Ch9 broadcasting two hours of RL content per week on one of their digital channels, and it never happened? Why the NRL never held Ch9 accountable for dishonouring their commitment is a disgrace.
