NRL targets global expansion with major fly-on-the-wall documentary series

Rugby league bosses want to copy the Formula One Netflix phenomenon that generates $85 million annually as they chase a worldwide audience for the NRL.

The NRL wants to create a fly-on-the-wall documentary series with global distribution as part of its vision to build a worldwide audience and attract new fans.

Revealing the wish list project on the eve of Sunday’s season-opener in Las Vegas, ARL Commission chairman Peter V’landys said Formula One had shown the way with Drive To Survive on Netflix.

The show’s eighth season, shot during the 2025 championship, started on air this week. American analysts calculate it delivers on average $85 million a year in streaming revenues for the platform.

It also created the platform for Formula One to become a major player in the US despite NASCAR remaining America’s preferred motorsport.

Las Vegas tourism bosses said Drive To Survive was the catalyst for the popularity of the Grand Prix that last year brought 300,000 to the city.

V’landys said with international awareness for the NRL competition now key to the code’s growth strategy, a raw multi-episode made-for-television content package could help pave the way.

“The success of Drive To Survive is a template for any sport,” V’landys said.

“It’s made so much money, brought so many new viewers to Formula One, and it has also brought them the younger demographic.

“It’s very important for us as a sport to focus there as well. Last year we had a massive increase in younger people watching our game.

“In order to keep doing that, you need to do those sort of shows. Drive To Survive has been one of the most extraordinary success stories ever … no doubt about that.

“People love human interest stories. They love behind the scenes. That stuff is vitally important to attract new viewers and a younger demographic.”

The existing NRL broadcast rights deal expires at the end of 2027.

V’landys and NRL CEO Andrew Abdo confirmed reimagining the Formula One show for rugby league would feature in discussions, which will ramp up in coming months.

But broadcast rights to matches would not have to go hand-in-hand with a docuseries. Netflix, for instance, has no rights to Formula One races.

“Drive To Survive demystified and explained the dynamics of Formula One in a really easy to understand way,” Abdo said. “But you need global distribution. You can’t just do that in Australia.”

V’landys added: “That’s why it may be ancillary. But that sort of venture is paramount for us … it is essential.”

The previous broadcast deal was announced 12 months out from its end date. If the same timeline was applied, the NRL would look to confirm in December.

“We’re going to take whatever time is necessary, because this is going to be one of the most important commercial transactions in the game’s history,” V’landys said.

“This is going to set the game up for the next 20 years if we do it properly. So we don’t want to rush it and miss something.”

Would be helpful if we knew what the AFL are getting for this - its by the same guys who do the drive to survive, but on Prime - announced in January.

Very, very hard to market anaemic, skinny white dudes, just look like a bunch of dorks running around punching a ball.

its relevant IMO, so unless you turned into a mod....no?
Take this afl shit out of here you troll. You’re not a moderator here you can’t ban and block like a big man if you don’t like what you see, but you should be the one banned in here for your incessant trolling.

you constantly post about afl in here, ratings threads etc we’ve had enough of it. Go post about league on Bigfooty which you don’t seem to do - only post about afl in here

every single afl post in here will be reported troll and I want to see you banned. For some reason we continue to tolerate your shit in here which I’ve had enough of. If you see this dickhead posting afl stuff report him.

Enjoy Vegas troll. Stay in your Adelaide hole.

Bullshit the guy is forever trolling. Look what he just posted to twitter, the average for each game at Vegas was 15k apparently which is only 20% capacity reached. thats not how these crowds will be counted for each game and he knows that, its not an official measurement just his own manipulation to make league look bad - something he does again and again.

Not only that he’s even wrong on his own logic, there was only 2 games in year 1 and there were 4 games in year 2 so his own calculations are incorrect. Be he puts them in a table and posts it as though it’s some official record he’s tracking. It’s all bullcrap aka trolling.

he can do it on twitter but if he tries that shit on here he should be reported.

does anyone really think there was only 15k there for any of the games? Was he the official counter at the game to measure that? No he’s just trolling.

he “stands by this” bull though, and I stand by the fact he’s world class troll.

Why don’t you post league content on bigfooty but you post afl content here?
Because over there they don’t like that, they put a stop to it, and he can’t get away with it. Over here we let him troll us under the guise that he’s providing “relevant info”. I’ve had enough of it. Go away if you don’t like league.

im not going to have another year of him posting afl “relevant info” on here. Post on an afl forum. I’ll be reporting it each time as spam.

The tosser has accused Pvl and abdo of lieing on multiple occasions

Firstly saying they lied about the crowd for Vegas one year then saying abdo made up tv ratings in nz

Then he got triggered with the broncos profit figure and implied the lions were bigger when nobody asked him

He’s obviously getting triggered at how well the nrl is doing

i want to give him the benefit of the doubt generally …but it’s hard to say this isn’t just a way to put as negative slant as possible on the crowd size .. 23 percent capacity ? …Come on now

The crowd average he gave Vegas is moronic.

It’s as clear as mud he uses his ‘platform’ as a means to provide often incorrect information to deflate a good news league story. Just this week he’s already done it multiple times and the season has barely started.

He tries to put himself and his views above others, even though he’s often categorically incorrect on top of being trolling.

I think it’s fair enough to say if it’s afl content we don’t want to read about it in these non afl threads. Let him continue his propaganda over on X but I don’t want to read about it here
