What's the real story. Leary is trying to say that Penrith could not compete with the Broncos offer of $180k. Wallace's manager says the Penrith never made him an offer. Snubbed is the word he is using.

Comparing the performances of Joey Willimas and Wallace at Suncorp highlighted the size of the blunder. Jason Taylor knows something about half backs. He cut Williams from their 2009 plans after 6 rounds.

Panthers supporters deserve to know the true story. Who punted Wallace ? The club doesn't need bad judges like that in authority.

no one is lying .Leary says they could not compete with the 180k offered he does not say they made him any offer. Elliott decided he did not want wallace that is the simple answer .So he was not given a offer by Penrith

I love this stuff.

The Panther plan was to recruit Elliot and give him a free reign ( so said Elliot in 2006) on football matters.

Having safely guided the team through to the greatest of all premierships, god retired and tried to leave a dynasty that would rule for another hundred years.

The Panthers used to be an old corragated iron shed with a footy team annexed. Now look at them, a multi-million dollar business with a footy team annexed.

The rot set in soon after 2004 when it became apparent that the "old guard" 2003 players were terminally and chronically fatigued. Their bodies in tatters. No Girds, Sats and Marty Lang to rely upon for the go-forward. They were gone or on the way out.

And the footy club stumbled like a drunken sailor. Marquee players such as Franze and Hookey bought in a mad rush of blood to the head. Franze was paid a kings ransom for 3 or 4 good games ( maybe thats an exageration).

One day when it became apparent that the kingdom was in trouble, "god" summoned the board with a please explain.

A couple got together and decided that it would be easier if they brought in someone else who could have a go and if the team failed, he would take the blame and they would be exonerated.

Thus a spy was sent to have secret talks with likely candidates and Elliot charmed his way through to interview level. Initial secret talks commenced in late 2004 I am led to believe.

Elliot had a robust 2005 season with the Raiders and in a stunning manner was signed right under John Langs nose in 2006. Langy was upset as was son Marty who despite his appearance and slurring of words, was actually a quite a good footballer.

It is believed that Elliot was actually planning 2008 as far back as 2005 and thats not to hard to believe in this day and age. He worked hard for two clubs in 2006. That was a remarkable and no doubt difficult effort.

Now Wallace was always seen as one of the Panthers best prospects, but its hard to break into a squad which in those days boasted numerous internationals and one Craig Gower.

The Panthers cuddled Wallace for ages and told him he'd be wonder-lad and the closest he got was in the match against the Broncos last year when he scored a field goal 45 metres out in extra time. Some say it was the greatest feild goal ever kicked. It was pretty damn close. The rest of the year, for a player of his class, well it was a little ho-hum.

But Wallace gets a bit uppity with his own ability and begins to believe his own media which makes Elliot and co a bit nervous and reserved.

When the staggering Bronco offer is announced, the panthers adopt a hard-nose policy to set an example to other promising youth including Jennings and Blair who were already creeping into firsts with a lad called Aiton who has that special something.

And Wallace wouldnt worship the ground Elliot walked on and egged on my Clinton whom Elliot insulted on the first day he arrived...he accepted the Bronco's generous offer.

Fact or fiction?

It has to be understood, deep in the dark dungeon of the Panther board, they go at each other blow for blow and then instruct their media to tell the villagers that everything is OK or is going to be OK.

But when under attack, the cadre are quick to join forces and put the revolutionaries in their place.

The heart and soul of the Panthers is conflict, it makes them tough and strong. But unlike other clubs, they dont have to play out their differences in the open. The machine that god left them, stills ticks like an atomic clock.

Rob Weaver was one of the best machinests the Panthers ever had. He turned black into teal, and teal into black. He has recently retired and will be undoubtedly, a hard act to follow.

To be honest, I couldnt care less who punted who. In my eyes there were way better half backs than Wallace at that time. Our junior grades show us that every time they run out.

My only wish is that our Management recruit the RIGHT ones and the coaching staff KEEP them at their best playing abilities.

This is the story and it comes for the horse's mouth when the situation exploded last year.

Wallace's manager told some fans that Panthers did not even make Wallace an offer. What he didn't say and which came out later was the fact that he had gone to Mick Leary's office to discuss a contract and Mick Leary said to him what is the price we are looking at to keep him. Wallace's manager is alledged to have said somewhere in the vacinity of $250,000 to $300,000 a season, a price even I think was way above what he was worth. Leary simply said, well, if that's the case, you have priced him out of our range, we don't think he is worth that sort of money YET

Rhino, is it possible that you can post the link to where you got that from? Or is that something you have just kept on your own harddrive from the official forum?

I say give Williams and Sammutt 4 rounds to prove their worth. If they continue to fail........throw Masada Iosefa the #7 and give him some specialised coaching. It is our only option.

I thought Wallace played ok but lets not kid ourselves, it's easy to look good playing next to Lockyer, I'm sure if Wallace was on our side yesterday the result would have been similar. He's not a gamechanger but rather a compliment to one.

Wallace didn't look that good, and he was part of a team that dominated. Seriously, Lockyer was the one running the show.

Wallace definitely played better then Joe Williams, but that bar wasn't exactly set high. Jarrod Sammut is a much better player, and had he been given the #7 jersey he earned in the trials, our attack might have actually been first grade standard.

Why is everyone refraining from criticising Sammut? He was invisible yesterday and when he was involved played poorly, that inside ball he threw to no-one was the ugliest pass all day...

Hard to fault Sammut when he got shafted on game day.

He was meant to be running the game, with Lewis at 5/8. The role he played yesterday was essentially a fullback working directly off Joe Williams. Joe Williams did SFA to help Sammut or anyone else play well.

As far as actual evidence goes, it's hearsay. But if I were a betting man, I'd put fifty on it.

Well i got to say i was glad when wallace left as i alwats am when any play announces mid season he is leaving as far as im concerned all that rubbish should be done during the off season.

I have no hard feeling towards wallace in fact the only problem i have is towards our obviously blind coaching staff.

Simply put while watching the game on fox i recall a comment made by gordon tallis simply stating what for us was painfully obvious , that every kick made by penrith generally went to wallace he played our plans to perfection and made us look stupid.

I dont know if it was intentional or what another comment moments later from tallis *the kicking game from penrith seems to be favouring wallace you would assume elliott must have gone through these plays with wallace when he was a panther and seems to want the panthers to stick with it now*

If this was infact the case gordo well im sure Eliott would have changed the style however if what gordo was saying was the truth then we are in for one hell of along season.

Considering wally when a panther put in kicks that were as readable for the opposition as that of a 5 yr old.

Well unlesss things change panther fans we are going nowhere fast so settle in for a long and tedious season.

On the other hand well we may bounce back this week and hit some form early on.

I would have loved Wallace to stay, but I don't think he would have been our solution at #7.

I still think, if it hasn't happened already, that his departure could come back to bite us hard, especially if we can't settle on a decent halves combination.

I remember reading it and I'm sure every penrith fan that ventures over to the official forum read it too. I was just wondering where abouts Rhino got the quote from, considering it's suppose to be Mick Leary's quote and Rob Weavers post, so that we can dot the i's.

Yep, I remember reading this on PI. What Rhino states is correct. Wallace went for the money - no other reason. Penrith wanted him to stay, but not at that price. Leary himself said that he was not prepared to pay that money.

Cheers,
Tom.

Penrith were also rumoured to have offered him the #7 jersey ahead of Craig Gower... who at the time was thought to be staying with us.

So it's hardly no interest at all.

Clearly the coaching guru that is Wayne Bennett saw something in Peter Wallace that most didn't. For the $180K a season they are allegedly paying him it must have been something very special. I have no ill will against Peter Wallace and hope he has a long and successful career with the Bronco's but I having said that I will be surprised if he makes 50 appearances. Peter is average at best and the minute the Broncos junior pipeline produces the next Lockyer I think Peter will be struggling.

I'm pretty over Wallace.

He isnt a Joey Johns or a Cam Smith etc.

Sure he was over-promoted by the club and that made his defection harder to stomach.

A serious loss is a player of the calibre of Lang or Stapo or Girds.

I regret is that he didnt hang about and is therfore unable to immerse himself in the emerging talent.

And Bennett has bought some real stinkers in the past.

The Panthers did a lot for Wallace and I might be off the mark etc but I cant help thinking that there was a degree of insincerity about his departure.

I think some fans have forgetten about the contribution of Martin Lang. We have really missed him up front. Craig Stapleton was probably the closest to Lang and we allowed him to leave for the basic wage. I am not one for bagging our management but I think more should have been done to retain Craig Stapleton who was a true metre eater and unsung hero.
