Peyton Manning set to announce his retirement

It appears Peyton Manning is inching closer toward deciding whether he will play in 2016.

According to Denver Post columnist Woody Paige, Manning "will acknowledge his decision" to retire by the end of next week. NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Feb. 1 that Manning told close friends that he expected to retire during the offseason. In addition, Manning has not told anyone in the Broncos' organization about whether or not he plans to retire, team and league sources told Rapoport on Saturday.

"Peyton has not made a decision on his future," Patrick Smyth, Broncos vice president of public relations, tweeted Saturday. "Plan remains for him to continue talks with the team this week."

Archie Manning told NFL Media's Rhett Lewis on Saturday that his son "hasn't told me a thing" about retiring next week.

If Manning plans to play next season, he must undergo a team physical by Friday, Rapoport added.

Speaking at the NFL Scouting Combine on Thursday, Broncos general manager John Elway said he's not pushing Manning to make a decision on retirement.

"I met with Peyton a couple nights ago and we had a good talk," Elway said. "As I said after the game, we'll give him as much time as he needs. He still needs some more time so we're going to afford him that time. He deserves it after 18 years in this league."

Elway reiterated several times that he's not pressuring Manning one way or the other and will meet with the quarterback again before the new league year begins March 9.

The Broncos executive shot down suggestions that he needs Manning's decision sooner rather than later so he can move forward on contract negotiations with impending free-agent quarterback Brock Osweiler.

"We're really not in a hurry," Elway said. "It's really fluid. We know where Brock is and he knows what we have to offer. We still have a great deal of interest in Brock and we'd like to do something with Brock. We'll start down those tracks and we'll start talking to Brock about a new contract and see what we can do there. But with that in mind, also affording Peyton the time that he deserves. We're not in any rush. Like I said we have 12 days and we don't feel like we're in a rush there. We'll continue to talk to Peyton during that time and continue to work with Brock and get something done with Brock."

Manning, who turns 40 next month, is one of the most accomplished quarterbacks in NFL history. In addition to his career yards record, which he achieved earlier this season, Manning's second Super Bowl triumph gave him an NFL-record 200 career wins (regular season, playoffs combined). Manning also became the first starting quarterback to win a Super Bowl with two different teams.

Manning was peppered by questions throughout the season about whether 2015 would be his swan song campaign. After he went down with a torn plantar fascia in the middle of the season, speculation grew about whether he would retire. It rose to another level after on-field cameras caught Manning telling Patriots coach Bill Belichick that "this might be my last rodeo" after the Broncos' AFC Championship win.

I reckon if someone wants to pay him $18m, he'll be back, certainly not in Denver though, not sure any owner is that crazy.

Otherwise, he will have plenty of time to make out with Papa John and work on his Budweiser business.

Meanwhile 38 year Brady signs an extension at the Pats.

I reckon the Broncos will draft a QB round one.

With their D, why not try a rookie.

Not a bad idea actually. They need a veteran backup though if Osweiler walks. Hassellbeck might be an option. RGIII could be worth a look as well.

Manning isn't going to be back at the Broncos at this salary
This give him time thing has an expiration date, they aren't paying him 19mil to play. I bet they already have a deal in principle in place with Brock.
The moment Manning retires or they have to cut him, they'll announce the new Osweiler deal
They aren't going QB in round 1, given the depth at DT, I bet they go there and plug the hole Malik Jackson is going to leave getting all the money in free agency

IMO, they go OL first round. Mathis will probably retire and Clady will be cut so the OL will be even weaker than it was this year.

Trevathan is definitely gone so they will have to get another MLB

My guess is that Manning retires as a colt with the 1 day contract thing.
He's already played one season too many, and come out with another SB ring, doesn't get better than that.

Yeah he needs to hang up the boots, this is where your pride come into it or your lust for bucks lol.
Because I'm sure the Rams wouldn't mind taking him for the marketing factor but another year and he'd be worse.

Yeah 1 day contract thing will be interesting... usually it makes perfect sense for a guy like him to do that, given he spent 10000 years building the Colts into what they are today... but he's JUST won a superbowl with another team, its a little awkward in that sense

Pretty sure he will announce his retirement in Denver, not Indy. We signed him after they cut him. I think we deserve to have Manning announce his retirement as a Bronco.

I see zero way Peyton signs a 1 day deal with the Colts. Still some bruised feelings, plus I would bet he'd find that to be contrived.

Yep. Manning will stage manage this every step of the way. I think Colts fans would understand if he retired as a Bronco but Broncos fans would be upset given he just won the superbowl with them.

There is every chance he won't have time to go do anything with the Colts anyway because he may be wearing a Tennessee Titans cap soon after taking a front office job or ownership track. The Browns may also be a chance but not sure he would want to raise his family there.
