Phar Lap poisoned, scientists say
Scientists say they have proof that Phar Lap, one of Australia's greatest racehorses, died of arsenic poisoning.
There were suspicions the Melbourne Cup winner had been poisoned by American gangsters when it died in the United States in 1932.
Australian Synchrotron Research Program scientist Ivan Kempson has told AM the researchers have used new technology to prove Phar Lap was poisoned.
"We analysed its hair for arsenic and discovered two forms of arsenic there," he said.
"One which was consistent with him consuming a dose just prior to his death."
