Roosters boss Nick Politis now worth $1.35 billion — so why isn’t he running the game?

Phil Rothfield, Sports editor-at-large, The Sunday Telegraph

THIS is rugby league’s $1.35 billion man who is rarely even consulted by the NRL administration.

Roosters supremo Nick Politis increased his personal wealth an incredible 74.6 per cent from $773 million last year via a thriving motor dealership empire and commercial property investments.

The 76-year-old even owns shares in Brisbane Broncos, which he purchased more than 20 years ago to help out the former owners who needed an urgent cash injection.

His status as one of Australia’s most successful businessmen was highlighted in last week’s Australian Financial Review Rich List.

There are many in the game who’d like the Roosters chairman to take on a bigger role in the overall administration of the NRL.

“I wish he was chairman of the commission,” said long-time mate Phil Gould. “I can guarantee you the game would have plenty of assets on the balance sheet if Nick was running the show. From a football perspective, modern-day management would be well advised to speak less, and listen more, to people like Nick Politis. His outstanding success in business makes him one of the truly great achievers in Australia.”

Politis was an ARL rep on the NRL’s executive board before the game was handed over to the independent commission in 2012.

It has since been so poorly managed the commission had to apply for a $30 million bank loan last year, which was unsuccessful.

Gould has no doubts the game would benefit if they bothered to listen to him.

“Next to my father, the greatest man I have ever met,” Gould said.

“The lessons I have learned from Nick have been life-changing. His passion for the game of rugby league is without question.

“Many people in the game today owe their success to Nick and the support he has given them.

“It’s the mark of a great man, who does so much for people, who could never do anything for Nick in return.”

But, but, he got SBW for a couple of years. Therefore he is Commission material, accoridng to Gould & Co.:rolleyes:

If Rooster's stands were packed at the SFS,they spent money on boosting their juniors.I'd buy in to his argument.
Gus is become rugby league's equivalent of Peter FitzSimons or Red Hankie head.Being as boring as batsh*t,arrogant as a politician, and nauseating like constipation.

Slothfield is just like flotsam in the ocean.lobs into land ,then floats out to sea ,to land somewhere else. His arguments are like that, chop and changing with the tide or circumstances.

Geez, this earth is occupied by some nimrods. And the worst part they get paid .

Judging by the roosters, surely he's the man to look to to increase crowds in Sydney! Club culture is brilliant too! How many assets does the roosters have?

The Easts Group have $67.5m in assets per the 2017 Annual Report. I wouldn’t talk about culture as a Broncos fan, third man in Thaiday, wife beaters in Pangai Jr and Matt Lodge, druggo James Roberts, Mr virtuous Wayne Bennett, thoroughbreds cash payments.

So you think Politis should be running the ARLC?

It's a pity the NRL don't have any pokies.

There's no debating the business acumen of Politis, I just don't like the house of cards approach he has to the governance of the game. Granted, he is very good at it and it is a quality the commission lack, if only he used it for good instead of evil. I'm sure if he was independent he would be on the commission.

Politis may not have had his name on the door, but he has been the driving force behind almost every NRL initiative for the last decade or so.

And quite frankly his record isn't that crash hot.

What makes people think he will suddenly start making money for anyone but himself?

Poor sloth's not had a good week.
Shown up over origin ticket sale claims
Shown up over claim the way NRL counts DH for crowds
Shown up for claiming NRL execs fly FC

Its pretty good going to get a trifecta so quickly!

Didn't Greenberg refute the story of NRL being knocked back for a loan already?

It becomes clearer by the day to me that the old soak is on the Vicky Kicky pay roll.
Why else would a so called Rugby League journo write such dross with no evidence to back up his claims.
