Pizza Stone For BBQ

Anyone have experience with these?
Ive just tried to use our new pizza stone for the first time in our new BBQ. Followed the instructions to the letter. Within only a couple of minutes the topping was perfectly done but the base was charcoal (supposed to take 7-10 minutes). I can only assume too hot? In that case Id have to ignore the firebox temp gauge because I went to its recommended heat.
Apparently you can put baking paper between the stone and base but Im not sure if that would have helped!

It can be hard to get the temp high enough and then keep it there. I'd try running the whole thing flat out with the hood down to get the temp as high as possible, then turn two burners off and put in the pizza.

how thick is the stone ?

the idea of the stone is to slow down the heat transfer and stop the base from burning

sounds like the whole thing got too hot

5mm aint gonna do much as far as spreading out the heat goes

I'd say either got too hot or cooked for too long

UPDATE:

Had to have another go today. Put the pizza in at 125 degrees instead of recommended 200. Didnt use the middle burners at all. Took 20 minutes to cook nicely and got up to just under 200 degrees but was fine (though used baking paper between stone and pizza).....Problem is that the pizza stone is now split in two!
Off to BBQ galore to "let them know".

Did you put the stone in before turning the oven on?

Yes.

Have new stone now.

The guys at the store said ignore the instructions and dont go 200-245 degrees and just do what I did the second time 150-200.

In-laws came around this arvo and said the same thing happened when they tried their pizza stone. 245 degrees...instant pizza apocalypse.

I use mine in a regular oven at around 180 and have never had those kinda problems- so agree that the excess heat is probably the culprit.
