Idris was part of the Dreamtime team last year.

Ben Jones captained the junior aboriginal side last year...

I think they might be pretty lax on the criteria

If Jones is aboriginal, then i'm an Ethiope. I'd be surprised if such a pasty ranga even had the faintest trickle of aboriginal blood.

I am unsure on this idea. Rugby league is very much about getting behind your team, and a lot of the time getting stuck into the opposition. This is why Origin works so well, you're either NSW or QLD and you cheer like crazy for your side and call the other side a bunch of f*cking pr!cks who have sex with their own mothers (or something to that effect). The rivalry is what makes it so successful. So if this Dreamtime vs All Stars game went down the same path, could we end up with an avenue to promote vilification of the Indigenous side and its supporters? And then them giving it back? Conversely, if this game doesn't take on the 'fierce rivalry' such as origin where supporters aren't as interested in their team winning but more just the spectacle, would it be very successful? Maybe I'm being too much of a cynic but it is something to think about.

For the record I personally would love to watch this game. I'm just worried about the impact it could have on the game and on society.

why's that?
doesn't he fit 'your' description of an indigenous australian?

He doesnt fit anyone's description of an aboriginal. He has no distinguishing features, and certainly not the slightest hint of darkened skin. When you consider most aboriginals these days are only half or a quarter aboriginal and are still quite dark skinned, it is odd that a clearly dominant gene does not show through.

He would be 1/16 at absolute best (whatever the minimum is to qualify as an aboriginal for government benefit purposes). In essence he is as aboriginal as I am french.

It certainly wouldnt be a good look seeing old men cheering for people to smash the blackies.... or conversely having indigenous folks chanting for their side to kill the invaders.

I have a feeling such a game would be much more like a spectacle in the same vein as the american sports with their All Star games. No one gives much thought as to who is going to win, they just want to see some freakish plays.

speak for yourself!
for mine if he identifies as being aboriginal and is accepted by his community, then he is aboriginal.

as for dominant gene, out of all the world indigenous peoples, australian aboriginals have the lest recessive gene.

you sound very ignorant on the issue of people identifying as an indigenous australians or what it means to some people.

As far as i'm concerned, if you are claiming a certain heritage based on 1/64th something blood, then you are not what you are claiming.

As was said earlier by GB, if you identify and the community accepts you, you are regarded as Indigenous.

(whatever the minimum is to qualify as an aboriginal for government benefit purposes).

Surely a minimum percentage qualification is the most logical, particularly in terms of earning benefits etc.?

If I have some indigenous mates and I choose to identify as indigenous and they choose to "accept" me, do I qualify?

I don't think the govt would agree.

All this I/4 or 1/6th bullsh*t is crazy. When you go to donate blood or receive blood, do you say "Oh excuse me, please only remove the 1/8th part of my blood that is Irish? or please only give me a third of Scottish blood cos that's all I want.

Blood is blood. You are what you are! If you have Aboriginal or Asian or whatever heritage in your background and wish to identify with that, then that's what you ARE.

If you get a letter signed by an elder that you are accepted in an Indigenous community, then yes you do qualify as an Indigenous person.

And that is absolutely ridiculous considering the benefits available to someone who took up that option.

I have a grandparent who was Canadian - and to even consider myself Canadian (even 1/4 Canadian or whatever that works out as) is absolutely ridiculous.
