Players give away try ball

Anyone think it would increase crowds if players gave the ball to a fan after scoring a try? (I just watched Cam Newton do this in the NFL as part of his post TD celebration).

You would be giving out maybe 8 game balls a game. Lets add that to the game day experience. I think kids watching on TV might nag dad to get them to the game.

Watch on TV? or get to the ground where you might get to keep a game ball and get it signed by a player?

Good idea. Not sure if it would increase crowds but sure give it a go. Ditch the bunker and spend it there.

Take it further....

The recipient gets the ball signed by the try scorer after the game and gets their name and address recorded and what not.... Those fans that have one of the balls scored by the seasons leading try scorer come the end of the season get put in a draw to win an all expenses paid trip to the GF and a corporate box.... or a lol@souffs T-Shirt, whichever they choose.....

Couldn't hurt!

I can see a ball flying into the crowd now, kicked high in exuberance...

Should be like baseball imo. Any ball that makes it into the crowd is a keeper and whoever catches it can take it home. Of course, you could put up an NFL style net on each end so you don't lose a ball with every conversion.

We have three times the ball gets into the crowd today

1 - goal kicks
2 - fieldgoals
3 - kicks for toych usually off a penalty

Only negative you may get is not getting the ball back from these circumstances

In fact the goalkick is the perfect give a away process

MOTM can give his ball sweaty, skidmarked jocks away to the autistic kid in the crowd.

Personally, I'd prefer his jersey - unsigned of course.

I agree except that there is something cool about the player presenting the ball in the ecstasy of try celebration (it might take away some of the pain of the video review system and the commentators whinging about the decision).

After a try usually the ball would be given to a kid or a crazily dressed fan or a hot chick or a grandmother...all the people you want getting the ball. It wouldn't necessarily need to be the section directly behind the try line - he could run up to the members section and throw the ball to someone. Then that persons face is on TV or the big screen. So kid at home gets to see it and wish it was him/her. Nag dad/mum.

I like this as it would mean the team includes the crowd in the try celebration (like Hayne after Origin 3 2014 with Batches Blues - a really iconic Origin image) unlike now when they largely exclude the crowd and just slap and hug each other after a try.

If the goal kick was the only time the ball is given away it would be a stacks on in the cheap seats section and it would always be the same sections get the ball.

What about when you catch a ball kicked into crowd from penalty you return the ball and trade it to the ball boy (or whoever) for a small cheap soft club ball signed by the captain and star players?

Did they give the ball away straight away?
What if they give the ball away and then the Bunker overturns it?
Do they have to snatch the ball back off the person in the crowd?

Cam Newton waited for the TD to be confirmed. But over there they never take more than about 10 seconds. So they are still in the throngs of ecstasy.

Let em keep it.
