The curtain raiser match for the Digicel Cup Grand Final this week is also going to be an exciting game.
The Vice-Chancellors Cup final rematch between the 2 major Universities in PNG should be a cracker.

From The University of PNG in Port Moresby they have the UPNG Pyhtons and from The University of Technology in Lae they have the Unitech Spartans.

VC cup final rematch on

THE Papua New Guinea Rugby Football League (PNGRFL) will host the rematch of the Vice-Chancellors Cup final this weekend between the University of Technology Spartans and the University of PNG Pythons with the final to be a curtain raiser match for the Digicel Cup grand final.

The organising committee for the cup confirmed on Monday that the suspended final from last month was now going to be a curtain raiser for the Waghi Tumbe/Lae Tigers grand final at the Oil Search National Football on Sunday.

Committee member Max Andrew told The National yesterday that both teams were notified of the decision from the PNGRFL to host the grand final rematch.
“We received confirmation from the PNGRFL about the rematch on Monday so we went ahead and informed both sides that there would be a game,” he said.
“The PNGRFL board have agreed to come on board and assist with the logistics and finances in getting the Spartans into Port Moresby for Sunday’s rematch.
“It’s a big relief for us because when we had a hard time managing and sending teams off after suspending the final.”

So if this does happen then hypothetically in a few years time the PNG National Competition could be call the Telstra Cup.
That's assuming that the sponsorship of the competition continues.

Telstra ‘discussing’ with Digicel

September 9, 2021The NationalBusiness

AUSTRALIA’s Telstra chief executive officer Andy Penn visited the country last month to discuss the planned purchase of Digicel Pacific, according to a report.

A report in the Australian Financial Review this week said Penn had visited PNG to discuss with its political leaders its planned purchase of Digicel Pacific.

According to the report, Penn’s three-day visit suggested that Telstra had “stepped up its due diligence to potentially partner with the Australian government to acquire Digicel and support the government’s goal of preventing the Pacific telco falling into Chinese hands”.

He met Prime Minister James Marape, Masiu, Australia’s High Commissioner to PNG Jon Philp, and representatives of the Irish billionaire owner of Digicel, Denis O’Brien, sources familiar with the trip told The Australian Financial Review.
Digicel is the largest owner and operator of 3G and 4G mobile phone networks in PNG, Fiji, Tonga, Vanuatu, Samoa and Nauru.

I wonder if the reason we don't see this competition in Australia is because it is sponsored by Digicel?

With Telstra potentially taking over we may finally see this competition.

Tigers defuse Tumbe fightback

By PARKER TAMBUA
LAE Tigers held off a spirited Waghi Tumbe side to claim their fourth title in six years with 16-10 win in the Digicel Cup grand final at the Oil Search National Football Stadium in Port Moresby yesterday.
Tigers captain Mark Tony told The National after the game that the win was a testament to the Lae Biscuit Company-sponsored side‘s culture which continues to see them dominate despite the transition of new players joining the team this season.
The 2021 minor premiers got off to a rousing start with former SP Hunter Jerry Teme scoring the opening try from dummy-half.
Halfback Jamie Mavoko couldn’t convert from the sideline which saw the Tigers lead 4-0 in the 9th minute.
The Tigers scored again in the 15th minute when centre Lynol Molpoya made a line-break and set up his winger Max Vali in the corner.
Mavoko’s conversion was successful which extended the lead to 10-0.
The Tigers’ momentum continued when Molpoya made another line-break on the next set and sprinted away to score under the uprights.
Mavoko made no mistake of the conversion as the Tigers led 16-0 by the 19th minute.
It seemed for a moment the Tigers’ score would increase with momentum in their favour.
However, with a match-ending injury to Molpoya in the 25th minute, the momentum shifted Tumbe’s way for the remainder of the first half as they scored back-to-back tries through Job Kar and Valentine Wamdi.
David Joseph converted only one of the two tries which saw the scores at 10-16 with the Tigers leading at half-time.
The second half was riddled with errors due to light rain and the wet condition which saw no points being scored.
Tumbe had enough opportunities to level the scores but they failed to convert them into points.
