PNG player Paul Aiton is to make his NRL debut this weekend against the Sharks in the Penrith starting team at hooker/lock.

Taken from A Thread in the nrl section saying nrl debutants 2006

Is he PNG born and bred, or just of papuan descent?

I'll be out there Friday, so will take a good look at him.

Great, but that doesn't really shed any light.

Yeah it does: he was born in PNG and he has no interests other than, and hasn't considered any kind of life after footy. That's a hardcore leaguie!!!

I've heard of plenty of ausies who was born in PNG, who's parents happened to be working there when he was born... technically making him qualified for both..... so is he a "papuan" or "PNG qualified"? Either way, it is still cool.

Well, he's brown skinned if that answers your question!

Seriously though, I'm guessing he's of mixed parentage, defo born in PNG and seemingly raised in Australia. Good luck to him, and it should be good for the Kumuls too.

I get it....

agree, tis a good thing to have more players from PNG in the NRL... Hope that he represents his native land. I would love to see more development done in this country, and more cooperation with the ARL to help search for tallent, and fund the development of future stars in PNG.

With the right structures in place, and even a modicum of financial assistance, PNG could very easily and very quickly become a serious player in international RL. The game is huge over there, even more popular than RL is in Australia, but it lacks guidance and infrstructure.

A guestimate would be at least 100,000 maybe even 150,000 people playing RL on a regular basis.

I always thought that with some proper administration, a select team of papuans could be found to compete in the Queensland cup. Gain experience and top coaching. Get more of their tallent noticed and signed on to NRL contracts....

Paul Aiton is a very good hooker. He is quick and has a good sense of the game and knows how to score a try. In a trial against the Knights in Alice Springs earlier this year he actually made a break and beat Milton Thaiday one on one and then outpaced the cover to score, that was from about 50m out. He is still only young and will be a major player for the Kumuls in the World Cup. Hopefully by then he will be an established first grader. As for Wayne Bond, also at the Panthers, he is the same, very quick, good skills and quite a decent organiser. He is more in the Preston Campbell mould though and slightly build, might be the only think holding him back at this stage. In saying that, he again will be an important member of the Kumuls team also in years to come. Penrith have one more PNG player in lock/five eighth Keith Peters.

On a side note in regards to PNG players, Balmain Jersey Flegg (U20) player Rod Griffin is playing really well and will no doubt come into consideration for a first grade backrow spot over the next few years at the Wests Tigers. Couple these up and coming players in Sydney with the PNG eligible QLD Cup players like Steve Franciscus, Trevor Exton, Derek Fletcher, Chirs and Michael Bond, Chad Leech and the English based Papuans Mikali Aizue, Stanley Gene, Marcus Bai and John Wilshere and you have the makings of a very strong PNG Kumuls side.

For what it is worth here would be my Kumuls team if picked tomorrow:

1 John Wilshere
2 Derek Fletcher
3 Steve Franciscus
4 Michael Bond
5 Marcus Bai
6 Stanley Gene
7 Wayne Bond
13 Keith Peters
12 (Local)
11 Rod Griffen
10 Trevor Exton
9 Paul Aiton
8 Makali Aizue

and then 4 PNG based players to make the number of 5 locals in the side.

Not a bad looking side at all for the World Cup considering only Macrus Bai and Stanley Gene could be considered "elderly statesmen" and the possible ones of not being there come 2008.

Hopefully with a bigger and better SP Cup back this season, we'll see a few more players picked up by Aussie clubs before the world cup. That's the short term outlook. Long term I'm hoping that NRL scouts will seriously start looking at Papauns youths. If we can get a few kids on the books of NRL clubs, then PNG should be far stronger for the 2012 world cup.

He wants to play for Australia...

fair dinkum it's time the RLIF gets tough. The kid was born in PNG.

Of course he does. He's Australian. It's great that PNG reps are playing in the NRL but what would be better is if there were PNG born and bred players in the NRL. But that won't happen because NRL clubs do not scout for talent in PNG and are unlikely to in the future. NRL clubs are looking for young players (16-18yo) and aren't that keen to go out of their way to look at them. So, if we want PNG kids to get a run with an NRL club we need to identify the best of them, bring them to Australia and put them in front of talent scouts. If we wait for them to chase PNG players it won't happen. Look at all thses Kiwi kids coming through most of them aren't even frpm NZ.

So...

I was born in Armidale but I'm not an Armidalian (if that's the correct term).

If he wants to play for PNG that's great but until we develop born and bred PNG players we'll continue to only have NRL players who could play for the Kumuls but will choose to try for Origin/Australia instead - as is their right having been brought up here. He clearly considers himself Australian and who can argue. The same applies for Neville Costigan. The only difference being Aiton has already played for PNG (although not in a Test) so he could be expected to stick with PNG.

If he’s grown up in Australia, then he has as much right to play for Australia as Hazem El Masri or Luke Rooney, who were born in Lebanon and England respectively.

What we need is one or 2 PNG kids to get an NRL breakthrough. If and when this happens, then I’m sure the scouts will start heading up there. There is an under 16(?) national championships later this year, so we really need to publicise this with the clubs.
