PNG Women to use Aust comp for World Cup prep

December 15, 2021The NationalSports

Eight to 12 women from around the country will be picked to compete in Queensland’s top women’s rugby league competition, the BHP Premiership, next year, according to an official.
Papua New Guinea Rugby Football League chairman Sandis Tsaka said the contingent would form the core of the national women’s team for next year’s World Cup in England.
He told The National yesterday that the governing body’s high performance team, led by national coaching director Michael Marum, was touring the country to identify players.
Tsaka said the team had already visited the New Guinea Islands with Southern (today) next in line followed by Mamose (Friday) and Highlands (Sunday).
He said discussions with Queensland Rugby League (QRL) and domestic partners were already in progress for the contingent to join clubs in the statewide competition next year. “Our domestic and international partners are working on sending eight to 12 women to play in the BHP Premiership next year,” he said.
“We’ll be working towards organising how they will stay in Australia, attachments with clubs and welfare programmes.
“We hope to finalise that by next month and the contingent will depart with the SP Hunters.
“We’ve already kicked off the process to identify players.
“We hope to identify 20-30 women and they’re expected to attend a high performance pre-season camp by Jan 9.
“We’ll then trim the group to between eight and 12 players, depending on how many club placements we are able to secure.”
Tsaka said the programme would boost the Orchids’ World Cup preparations. “Our women are ranked fourth in the world,” he said.
“They’re not going there to just make the numbers.
“They’re going to compete and we’re confident that they will do well.
“Our initial plan was to hold the national championships and identify our core group for the train-on squad.
“But the Coronavirus has affected our senior competitions and national programmes in the last two years.
“We had to come up with another plan as we were concerned about our women’s preparations for the World Cup.
“Hence, the placement programme which should stand our Orchids in good stead for the showpiece event.”

PNG Women to trial for Aust comp

PAPUA New Guinea Rugby Football League high performance manager Michael Marum says his team is looking at assembling 15-20 women to trial for spots in Queensland’s BHP Premiership next year.
Marum, who completed a tour of the New Guinea Islands (NGI) last week, told The National that the high performance team was finalising names for a train-on squad that would vie for spots in the Australian state’s premier women’s competition.
“We’re looking to bring at least 15-20 women for the camp in Port Moresby,” he said.
“We’re hoping to assemble the squad in Port Moresby by the end of this month, so we can kick off training in the first week of January.
“I’ve covered parts of NGI now and we also have another team that was based in Lae. They moved up to Goroka where testing was completed for the Highlands.
“There is a good number of women in the region and we’ve noticed a few talents who we will be asking to join us for a high performance camp in Port Moresby.
“It’s going to be a big move for most of the women, so we want to screen each player carefully.
“We will have to inform their parents and discuss the process like travel and studies in Australia.
“We have to find out if they have commitments in the country.”
League chairman Sandis Tsaka said last week that a final contingent of eight to 12 women would be selected to train and play with women’s teams in Queensland.
The contingent is expected to depart the country with the SP Hunters by the end of next month.

Former PNG Kumuls coach confirms his switch to politics and a run for Parliament

By Richard Ewart on Pacific Beat

After taking the national rugby league team the Kumuls to fifth on the world standings, and leading the PNG Hunters to victory in the Queensland Cup, Michael Marum has confirmed he is stepping away from coaching altogether to pursue a place in Papua New Guinea's parliament.
He'll be standing in his home province of East New Britain as an independent and looking to win a regional seat.
If he succeeds he says he will concentrate on making life better for his own people.
And while he's talking about a low key campaign, he has some star names behind him from the rugby league world. They include many of his former players, among them Justin Olam, who Marum recruited for the Hunters and helped on the road to NRL stardom with Melbourne Storm.
"I sent a message out to all those players when I made up my mind and then they would send messages back. Justin called up straight away, and he was crying and talking to me. And yeah, I've got plans for using their voice, bit of video from them as well. Everyone follows the game up here, so hopefully there's a game plan there we can use."
While he was mulling over whether to run for Parliament or not, Marum was wooed by various political parties, but in the end opted to go it alone.
"I just wanted to be really independent, not pulled down by party policies, so I could still be free to make my own decisions on what I stand for," he told Pacific Beat.
Despite being regarded as a model province in PNG, Marum says there is still much to be done in East New Britain, particularly in the fields of education and health, and he believes a younger man will bring more energy to the MP's role.
"Talking about education I want to make sure there are proper classrooms, that teachers get to work on time. I come from an area where if you need an ambulance to go to hospital, you get charged 150 kina. You go to hospital and there's no medicine there."
So for Michael Marum is it a case of being elected on his past record in his community, and on his reputation, rather than going out to sell himself to the voters?
"What I've done already in the past 20 years plus, people are looking at that, but politics in PNG is different. Some people have the money to go and do such things you know, they can talk about you and you know, spoil your name, but I'd be really careful on what I do and make sure we go out there and tell the truth about everything. I'm basing it on pressure from the public coming and asking me to stand forward."

Digicel sponsors K7mil

May 12, 2022The NationalSports

DIGICEL PNG yesterday announced a platinum sponsorship of K7 million for the national men’s and women’s rugby league teams over the next three years.
Digicel PNG senior vice-president Lorna McPherson said during the announcement in Port Moresby yesterday that the sponsorship would cover the teams’ World Cup campaign in England at the end of year as well as other international fixtures till the end of 2024.
She said the sponsorship showed the telecommunication company’s continued commitment to supporting PNG rugby league.
“As part of our platinum sponsorship, the Kumuls (men) and Orchids (women) will each receive K1 million this year, K1.1 million in 2023 and K1.2 million in 2024,” MacPherson said at the Santos National Football Stadium.
“Also, as part of our sponsorship, the two teams will receive over K150,000 worth of phones, Wi-Fi devices and data services.
“Digicel PNG is fully committed to the development of rugby league in PNG. If you look at the facts that we have been investing in the local semi-professional competition, the Digicel Cup, we have invested in the SP Hunters, and now we are investing in the national teams, the Kumuls and Orchids.
“This really shows the development plan we have in supporting the game that we are all passionate about.”
Papua New Guinea Rugby Football League chairman Sandis Tsaka thanked Digicel for its continued support towards rugby league.
“This is a significant investment by Digicel,” he said.
“Digicel has invested a lot in the last 15 years across all tiers of rugby league in PNG.
“They have invested in the grassroots, national competition, international side (Hunters) and now the national teams (Kumuls and Orchids).”
