PNG's back.

Doubt it’d get any backlash unless it’s the Bears planning to play in Sydney. Sydney would just be a training base not their target market for supporters. A FIFO PNG or Pacifika team isn’t going to win over very many if any fans in Brisbane or Cairns if they’re based there either.

I read some where that Queensland has the largest population of PNG expatriates, with most centred around Cairns.

I'd rather see the game expand into New Zealand. There will never be a better opportunity to capitalise on rugby union's financial problems in Australia and New Zealand. The NZRU aren't broke, but they cannot compete with the domestic leagues from the RFU, JRU and FFR.
Couldn’t agree more mate and I’ve been saying this for years.

New Zealand are stuck between a rock and a hard place in terms of they are too strong for the Australian super rugby sides but too small of a nation population wise to go it alone with a standalone competition and to compete with like you say the English, French, Celtic and Japanese domestic RU competitions.

super rugby in New Zealand badly misses the South African teams and since they left super rugby and been on a downward trajectory ever since.

The ARU should really think about folding the Force and Rebels. If they do then announce the West Coast Pirates as the 18th team ASAP. It'll be the perfect time to expand into Perth

Shouldn’t really compare this to a WW2 analogy and I’m not for one minute comparing super rugby to the axis powers(😏) but this feels a lot like 1944 onwards in which super rugby is on the retreat everywhere and the Allies……..sorry NRL are on the march.

Perth or NZ2 are both in play for sure.

Doubt they’d have much say if a PNG team wanted to base their players and training there and fly out to home games in Port Moresby.
Clubs get final say on any expansion. Dumb bit that’s the way the constitution is. Nrl has to get a 100% vote.

Why do you think the nrl club grant went up $5mill when they were convincing them to vote in dolphins after the clubs had expressed their desire for no expansion?

I just don’t see Sydney clubs jumping up and down about a PNG team being based in the city for training. Not like they’ll be taking sponsors or supporters.

I’m sure FNQ probably has the highest concentration of PNG born or heritage population in Australia. It would still only be a few thousand at most I’d guess though.

Edit: According to this around 3000 PNG born live in FNQ. Approx 30,000 in Australia total.

PNG bears?

Papua New North Sydney Guinea Bears?

Raises an interesting point, would Sydney clubs be for the return of the Bears even if it is based in WA, NZ or PNG? For the minor bump some will get from a historical rival rejoining it also means another club sniffing around the Sydney market.

Maybe but again bears have said they have sydney companies lined up as possible sponsors (might just be spin of course) so I’m guessing the other clubs might still see it as yet more competition. Potentially fans as well I suppose if bears were back and playing at nso, I wonder if the increase in roosters fans has come from the next generation of what would have been ns fans?

if you are going to pay lip service to a png club though by basing them in Sydney might as well pair them with someone who already has the infrastructure in place.

If PNG gets the licence then I hope it's a huge success. The Hunters have made the Queensland Cup a better competition. I have my concerns about player safety and recruitment, but let's wait and see what happens before dismissing it altogether.

Let’s wait and see what happens, sounds like a great business plan! Where did you get your mba?

Depends what the end goal is. Partnering with the Bears would put an anchor on them ever getting out of Sydney if/when the day ever comes where basing it all in PNG is viable. Bears as ever will want more and more as time goes on as well if they’re allowed to have any sort of controlling stake in the club.

I’m laugh at you, not the png bid. though it does appear bat sht crazy an idea lol

It's not something I'd go with if I was in charge, but it won't be the end of the world provided Albo funds it.

I couldn't be bothered being upset over the ARLC's decisions. Nothing I can do about it.

If there's one benefit to PNG getting a team it is showing fumbleball fans that unlike their game, rugby league matters outside of Australia.

I’d absolutely love for the nrl, pngrl and aus govt to work together to a ten year strategic plan to have a proper png team based in png playing out of a increased stadium with an amazing png system underneath it furnishing the team with all its players.

That’s what should happen, not parachuting in A sht idea based in another country with not much underneath it meaning the number of png players in it will be minimal.

do it right and it will set up rl in png and the nrl to be something very special.

mind you I’ve been saying the same for perth for ten years as well!
