In all of these hypothetical conferences/ pools do they have to have there own ladders with top teams from each one playing finals?? I would prefer a single table with a similar final series to what we currently have... otherwise you could never get so called 'rivalries' meeting in a grand final.

I would hope that top 2 in each ladder are able to progress to make up finals, then it's structured by f/a to see where they land, so there could be anyone play anyone really

The knights group don't travel much, should be putting those with nz's and swap out souths, and raiders in its place, Raiders vs Storm is a good match up, aswel as souths and dragons

Have dogs and tigers in the perf one together

you combat that by having their 1 off season matches against papua, perth, cowboys, storm, warriors and nz all away.

The biggest stumbling block, other than how to split them, is what does winning a conference mean to teams and fans?

In MLB, which is probably the most split comp in the US, there is a real prestige in winning either the National or American league penant. Not as prestigious as the world series but still big. Also, rivalries in each league are often bigger than geographical rivals in inter-conference games.

The NRL when it gets to 20 teams should keep it simple.

Each team plays each other once = 19 rounds.

Then split into 4 groups of 5 who play each other again = 23 rounds.

Groups:
Queensland: Brisbane, Dolphins, Gold Coast, North Queensland, PNG
South: Canberra, Cronulla, St George Illawarra, Melbourne, Warriors
West: Canterbury, Parramatta, Penrith, Perth, Wests Tigers
North/City: Manly, Newcastle, Roosters, Souths, TBA

If team 20 is a Queensland team you could slot them into the Queensland group and move PNG into the North/City group. If it’s NZ2 you could swap Melbourne into North/City group and put NZ2 into the south group.

Anyway, just spitballing, hope that's OK with Chairman Pipsqueak.

Quality post @AlwaysGreen.

The only thing with this, is its quiet hard to know what clubs would be best suited to what division (or groups as you put it) until we know the make up on the 20 teams. I think the balance of the groups/division change if team 20 is from Christchurch or if its from SEQ or if a dark horse comes out of no where.

Again that's unfair, the distance from Perth to png to nz to Melbourne to nz2, to Townsville, its very bias to have to make teams outside Sydney travel those distances more often

You play each team once = 19 rounds. Then three teams twice.

3? why 3 times, how is that even useful then, the point is to structure teams inside your pool to play twice, home and away then play everyone in the other pool once, with 20 teams its 18 rounds within your pool then 10 against the other pool, not sure NRL want to do 28 rounds, best way is to shorten the conferences to 5 teams each pool
Gives you the 19, then play 4 inside your pool again, 23 rounds

Conferences will only happen after the number of teams outside of NSW = the number in NSW. That's allows a conference final in Sydney. What happens in regular season is irrelevant.
