i didnt speak of sponsorship…Im asking about how will people determine in 10 years time whether this move will be successful or not … not just for the team but for the NRL

Say what you want about this team but that’s a pretty crazy win for PVL and league. $750 million dollars in funding to get this team off the ground is crazy. Im happy to eat crow, didn’t think there was any chance of this happening.

I see a lot of doubters in this thread but now we just wait and see. I think this has the potential to be a huge win for league going forward but it’s hard to say.

So the proof of success is what this brings. Forget the political stuff, the reason why the NRL have gone to PNG is because they believe it will result in a massive influx of player talent that will strengthen the comp and allow for further expansion. That they can do this on the Australian government $$ is a massive bonus.

How many NRL quality players will be produced? In the next few years a few. In the next 50? Don't know, and I'll be dead anyway.

Bonus : 18 teams Equals 1 more game to sell.

An hones Success would be more kids going to school (NRL ambassador programs, etc) and early stages of a tourism industry (it has the makings of a new fiji, hopefully all it needs is that first bit of infrastructure and publicity to get it goong)

It would be nice to get new png players coming through, but that is not a core marker of success

My guess is they are ok with it generally and won’t look to get rid of it like an offshore wind farm.
But they are probably being quiet in case it develops into a f**kfest of corruption so they can piss it off and blame albo.

cool! There is definitely the money there to maintain a team.

i think the biggest hurdle was getting it going. Once it is established, the hope would have to be that there is no more need for gov support.

it is hard to believe today, but the Broncos was considered a major risk back in 1988. Hopefully in 30 years, png is as obvious a success as the bronx are now

So the nrl saves a 17.5 million grant for ten years on top of the 60 million to clubs means the game is getting 235 million from this

From an NRL perspective the markers of success have nothing to do with kids going to school or tourism, that's for PNG to measure.
