Not at this time. But logically you'd expect to see something like:

U16's PNG Academy continues for kids showing some talent
U17's PNG NRL club run Cyril Connel Cup side
U19's PNG NRL club run Mal Meninga Cup side
Hostplus cup Hunters side to come under the NRL club

+ equivalent for female sides

The cost to run three sides in the QRL state comps plus women's equivalents would be many millions.

Then support to improve training facilities, coaches, medical care etc for the 12 PNG Digicel cup sides with Junior programs sitting under them, again many millions.

Likely the funding for all of that will be split between the PNG NRL clubs $29mill a year Govt grant and the $25mill a year pacific grassroots funding grant that presumably the NRL is going to administer? .

This is a similar debate to the NZ discussion yesterday …. I’m more concerned about those junior age teams playing against Australian opponents then in the Digicel cup

Racism? :)
Hunters arent that bad a side so not sure whey we havent seen more players picked up out of it tbh. Lazy scouting or not feeling a PNG player will easily adapt to Australian club environments, maybe feeling defensively they tend not to have the techniques needed? Who knows. Interesting though that so few have been picked up so far.

are you serious about the racism ? Have you looked at an NRL team lately ?

If they thought the players would succeed they would be signed up … it’s pretty much as simple as that …

they need to be playing against Aust kids from 15 yrs old , doing the gym work and diet stuff …its what the other clubs do right?

Yeh but there's only 24 or so places in the elite squads.
Having 12 quality Digicel clubs bringing through kids from U5's is just the bottom of the triangle in feeding the top. I think people underestimate how important it is to get your U5's-U15's systems improved. Sure only 2% of them might then go into the U16's and upwards elite systems, but the better talent at the bottom the thicker the cream at the top.

No, hence the smiley face

Yep and that's where the money will go. In elite systems at U16's (academy) U17's and U19's QRL state comp sides and improving reserve grade facilities and coaching.

The PNGRFL have been on a recruitment drive since late last year.
So some of the money is going to be spent on staff.
This one was advertised around Oct/Nov lat year and I don't think its been filled yet.

Visa
Lazy also
So NRL clubs will gladly pay $500k or $750k for an English player to get released, or recruit a Canadian Rugby Player, but are "too lazy" to recruit from PNG?

I call bullshit.

At least one club would have pushed this hard if there was NRL level talent there.

haha! we could have saved a lot of discussion then…

tick tick tick ….three years is not a lot of time
Its not but then it doesnt need to be, in reality the starting 20 players are going to be current NRL or SL first graders (same as Redcliffe did and are still doing in Yr3), hence why they are building a luxury compound and have tax free incentives.

If Hunters are one of the top clubs in QRL with a 100% PNG team it suggests the systems are already doing the job at that level, the elite system will just take it up the next notch to NRL production level. Will likely take 5 years or so to see the fruits of the labor I'd say.
