PNG's performance

Disappointing not to see them get a try at least but there were some great individual performances out there, menzie yere in particular. They also need to get the ball out wide, rarely did we get to see guys like jessie joe parker or menzie yere touch the ball. If they can work on that a bit more they might just get a win against england

70% possession against, 13-2 penalty count, pouring rain and the dropsies. WTF that ref? :? It is difficult to gauge how PNG would play as they had no momentum at all in the game.

Seemed like stupid mistakes killed them. When they were under the pump from Australia they were quite good in defense. Their attack was pretty piss poor though, it seemed like they'd take a scoot from dummy half on the first and second, followed by two forward hit ups and then on the 4th chuck it out to the backs and hope for the best. If they could get some structure and remove the poor mistakes from their game they'd be a decent side and give England a good run.

What were we expecting from this team? I have to ask the question, it seems some were expecting PNG to push the Australians. As Scubby correctly points out, NOTHING went the way of the spirited PNG Kumuls. They had no posession. Lacked discipline that led to a lop sided penalty count and were playing in greasy conditions. I find it hard to knock them.

They lost the second half 16-0. Plenty of more experienced National sides have been capitulated a lot worse after being down 26-0 at half time.

To be honest I was suprised from what we saw from them, and was expecting a lot less. I just think that had they not made elementary mistakes, which can happen to any footy team on a bad day, they would have stayed in the contest and it would have been more competitive. Congratulations to them though, they should take a lot of confidence out of that game. 16-0 Second half is sensational for them.

If they could cut out the stupid sh*t in their game they would have pushed us today, some of their ball handling was kid sh*t. That number 4 for them can hit, not sure how old he is but could have been a good buy for a club in the NRL.

The scoreline did not surprise me. But at the same time I thought we did not play that good. We were very rusty which is understandable considering how long some players have gone without playing a game. If we had a few games under our belt before this game I have no doubt we would have run up a century of points.

But back to the Kumuls. I thought they were very very ordinary, especially in attack. They never looked like scoring or even getting close enough to scoring. They run hard, but there is no real plan to there attacking game. We had no difficulty in stopping there attack.

As for their defense, well they do hit hard and scramble well. But in general there defense is not up to scratch. Thier is no structure to it.

I expect both the poms and the kiwis to run up big scores against them.

PNG should be better for todays run, but I am not sure how much if any improvement they have in them.

Although the game of Rugby League is the Kumuls nation sport i really think that the standard they played to just reflects the structure of the game in their country.
As a developing nation they should play against other nations of their standard just encourage them to keep trying.
They will get better over time but to play 1st up against Australia there was never going to be a fairytale finish to read about tomorrow.

They just need some good attack and go forward, and better defence. I mean they were pretty enthusiastic with their defence, plenty of big hits and got tackles.

We all expected a thumping, I mean 42-0 is probably less than expected, but for a team with only NRL players and a few SL players, the rest in Queensland Cup, NSW Country and of course PNG, I thought PNG did ok.

The refereeing certainly didnt help some of those decisions were woeful, you wouldnt get that in the NRL. This Shane Rehm bloke Ive never heard off, obviously from local league in New Zealand. What happened Leon Williamson?

Good post.

Short term, a little improvement. I'd try Aiton at seven for a start as opposed to lock given he is a hooker at NRL level. I think he would add some direction there. There fullback from the Titans had some ticker too, there big centre nicknamed Jukebox (sick nick name by the way lol).

Long term, HUGE improvement. I think PNG recognise where they are at today and know this is the first step to realising a bigger picture. We need to get more NRL calibre coaching to their league, scout more PNG players and get them in to the two BIG competitions that being the NRL (including the feeder clubs/leagues) and Super League.

There is no doubt they can hit but there is still a lot of rubbish in thier game. The penalities were there - they just don't have the disipline of an NRL side who are coached in how far to take it with tackles and play the balls without getting penalised.

I thought the bigger issue is even when they managed to finish a set, they didn't seem to have much of a clue. Maybe the rain really threw thier game plan out the window.

I'm thinking that they prepared all year for playing the big teams without thinking about having to play wet weather footy. In the unexpected conditions they just weren't prepared.

I'm thinking Yere might have played himself into a contract if he's not already on one and I'm pretty sure that's the point- the strategy is to get as many boys in front of the selectors, get them professional contracts and therefore advance the game. Hence the push for an NRL team as well as the 'politics' before the tournament- I'm pretty sure they want the team to all return to PNG to be an influence etc, not so much play every NRL player that has a remote connection to PNG.

WTF was that ref about? what a clown!

he wasnt the best ref ive seen but tbh he could have penalised png another 10 times for laying on the player or late flops.

i thought the scoreline flattered png, they really have gone backwards since even last year. they had no structure and no gameplan, and their inexperienced coach should taker a fair amount of blame. they need an experienced coach with gene there as an assistant and they need a lot more time together.
