Points to ponder

1) Covell kicked a 60 metre drop out. Does anything more need to be said?

2) Our defence is a bit of of myth. Have we been bluffed by scowling faces, tough guy tactics and the odd bit hit. IMO we are still mentally weak. My reasons are these.

In 5 matches this year we have conceded points in the last 5 minutes of the first half. Total 30 points. We have conceded a further 53 points in the last quarter of matches. Our total "against" is 169. 83 points in the tired end of halves represents a whopping 49.11 % of the total points scored against us. That indicates a major problem with concentration.

Side note: 33 of the 53 points scored against us in the final quarter of matches have been in the last 3 weeks. So it's a downward trend as well.

3) As with last year Kingston offers very little in attack. However, that doesn't make de Gois the saviour because he's the one on the field when the concentration wanes. Maybe Kinga has it over de Gois for talkies.

4) We didn't play as well as people are making out last night. We won the penalties 9-3. We had 6 more sets than them 41(35) yet our completions rate was a paltry 63%(77%)
We had the ball for 51% of the time and a majority of that was in their half. When we did score there were 2 individual efforts (Pom and Bird), 1 fluke from a rebound and on from an offload. We made 40 less tackles and made 300 more metres. That's the realistic breakdown. How do you lose that game?

5) I was not a fan of Anderson moving into the centres as I wasn't convinced he could read defence well enough. He's proven that over and over again. We need a different right centre. Williams isn't the answer either. I don't know what is to be honest but perhaps Steppa should get a shot there.

6) IMO the bench rotation was poor last night. When the Cows came back at us from about 60 minutes onwards the pack we had on was Selmes, Douglas, Steppa, de Gois, Weston and Gallen. Far too inexperienced (yes probably by necessity). One of either Looloo or Stapler should of been on at all times. Williams first try came on a short side where they had only 3 blokes to our 6. Worst of it was the 6 compressed into about 10 metres and Smith still got Williams outside our line. Who was calling that structure? No one would be my guess as there wasn't enough experience out there to read it - apart from Jason Smith.

7 Misi's lost his mojo. Injured? Whatever, he's not the bloke who debuted in fine style a few weeks ago. Need Kearney back for this year and long term need to buy a fullback.

Maybe more later

Covells drop kick was massive. Such a monster and we now have someone to take the 1 pointers...

All perfectly valid points.

I am glad someone has introduced Sticky to the forum as well. People on here have been calling for the Cov to take the kickoffs/dropouts for ages.

We got about an extra 15 - 20m from the dropout (distance) and also about an extra 10m off the kick offs (where the first tackle is). The Cov is in such fine form I hope the Kiwi selectors are paying attention. FMFF though watch them pick Vatuvei again and again

What we need is simmo at the back, by far the safest FB at the club, Keaney can play centre, and anderson needs some ball work.

I dont think our defence is a myth, without thommo, and with guys like misi, selmes and brown in the side we still only conceded 26, the amount of times we spilt the pill i thought it would have been more.

I do agree our concentration is lacking though, hence the dropped ball, hence the points scored off the turnover.

god could only imagine if that was simmons at the back last night - the tirade...

will be interesting to see when he is fit where he is selected

i would assume a game in PL first

Doubtful, I reckon he would have slotted in at FB if Ando wasn't injured. I reckon he will go to centre with Brown outside him.

Or he could go to fullback, Misi to the wing and a centre brought up. Doubt that will happen though.

I doubt we'll see any blooding of new players till ALL the current contract sh*t is worked out.

We don't want to be starting 2008 in trouble with the cap because we blooded some second tier dudes as as happened recently to a few clubs.

Excellent points raised Chaos.
Note that Covell took the kick offs as well. Much higher and deeper than Kimmorley's.
Mental frailty is still an issue as you rightly point out. Conceding points late shows lack of application. We have let 4 leads slip in the last 10 minutes this season. The only game that we really toughed it out was NZ. This has to be addressed as we don't have the skill to blow teams away so we need to learn how to get over the line.
I am concerned that if our pack has a few off games we will really struggle. The possession and territory stats that you mention for last nights game have been a regular occurance for us this season and yet does not guarantee victory. We dominated the Cows pack last night yet still found a way to lose.
Agree that Anderson needs to go back to PL (once recovered from injury). He has been given a armchair ride so far and his performances have not justified having any more chances.

I 100% agree that Anderson does not defend well in the centres. This was shown in the Broncos match when 2 tries were scored on his side and then he got injured. Williams was moved to center and the defensive problem was fixed.

Anderson is probably better suited to winger. Simons is definitely the solution at fullback. He is by far our best outside back.

I am not sure where Kearney fits in. Not at 7 or 6. He is not up to it.

Not this week, but as soon as he is Kearney to 1, and Simmo either to the centres or the wing.

Until then Simmo to FB. Misi has been sh*t the last few weeks and I am starting to wonder if he was playing above himself then, or playing far below his best now.

Wow that has come as a surprise hasn't it!!!
Somebody else in the team taking a kick offs & drop outs.

FMFF, only took SIX f*ckEN YEARS for those who dont know to catch up to speed.

It is a complete slap in the face & shocking insight into the lack of imagination & analysis the current coach has for it to take 12 weeks for him to work it out.

Disgraceful coaching! but at least he gets it right before 10 weeks happens.

So our Coach is now useless?

Awesome.

Wouldn't happen to simply you having a sour taste in your mouth knowing whats going to happen in the next week?

Sticky coached teams don't come home through the regular season. its the nature of the style. The teams expends too much energy in the first 20-30 minutes.
They neeed to be well in front!!!

I thought we came from behind in the broncs match, and in the period where we expended all our energy last night we were down 16-0, only to get to 24-16 up and blow it because we switched off mentally.

That set we played in the 74th minute is where we blew it, slow one out running, almost like time wasting. Let the cows have a breather then hit straight back.

in the firt 30 we run double shooters on a compressed line at times. The line is at full speed.
When the points were scored is not always indicative.

Stickys teams run out of juice in the regular season. Fact.
Get a big lead & try & blow the lead out or roll it home.

No for Bilambil Jets. Very young. played a bit of backs & forwards at Murbah Mustangs.
The great paul Donahgy also played with the Mustangs juniors.
