I never thought these sorts of distinctions existed in Australian or New Zealand Sport. But as somone who has been a fanatical Cronulla fan from New Zealand since I was a kid, and an intensely political person, I have been surprised on one or two occasions when I have told Australian aquaintances that I support the Sharkies, they have told me that right wingers support Cronulla and lefties go for St George. Is there anything like a grain of truth to this?

Not IMHO.
I have many mates who are Sharks fans (obviously) and most of them vote left. Some of my family are sharks fans too, and they vote right.
FYI, many years ago St George had all sorts of trouble with a NeoNazi called Skull.
My point here is that in Europe and South America, sporting teams are often used as a means to covertly propel a political agenda as they are one of the few organisations that extreme governments will tolerate.
As we really have no such history in Australia, IMHO, teams in the NRL just represent geographical areas.
The Doggies may have a large Lebanese support base and the Bunnies may have a large aboriginal supporter base due to the fact that lots of those folk live in the local area. Politics is probably a side issue when viewed through the prism of NRL.
You may however wish to look at our rival code, RU. RL has a strong Catholic following as many of the Catho schools have historically played it. Many of the private proddy schools chose rugby union.
