POM TO REF NRL ?

LEADING English referee Russell Smith will officiate during the first few weeks of the NRL competition.

The NRL accepted an offer of Smith's services for at least eight weeks and the 41-year old will referee his first game in a trial match between St George Illawarra and Manly on February 26.

He has refereed three Super League grand finals, 25 Test matches and last year's tri-nations final between Australia and Great Britain.

Smith said he was looking forward to the challenge.

"I think it will be a great experience," Smith said.

"I've refereed Australian players at the highest level and I believe I'll be able to adapt to the Australian conditions pretty quickly.

"Obviously everything comes down to form and I'll be getting into training with the Australian referees as soon as I can get there."

NRL chief operating officer Graham Annesley said Smith would be considered for first grade matches when the season starts.

"Russell approached us about gaining experience in the NRL and we were only too happy to take advantage of his services," Annesley said.

"There is no question that he has proven himself as an on-field official and (referees coach) Robert Finch has already said that Russell would be considered as a first grade referee.

"It's another pointer to the strength of the NRL that people want to at least experience such a strong competition."

It'll be interesting to see how he likes refereeing at Albion Park on a 'bush ground'!

Good to see, he's the best ref in the world and I hope he goes just as well down here.

He'll definitely pick up some slack. I guess Tony 'Oil Slick' Archer will find his way back to PL now.

From what I've seen he goes quite well. Should be a cert for first grade.

Tony Archer...

*shudder*

Russell Smith...

Glen Black should be given a run too... will help him out no end. No offence, but if he's the best that the Kiwis have at this time, it's not exactly desirable. But having said that, he handled himself as well as could be expected during the Tri-Nations.

Yeah I agree bring in some Kiwi refs, give that Black a go, he seemed alright in the Tri-series a lot better than some of the current NRL refs.

I agree with everyone here, great move. He really stood out in the test matches I saw in the tri-series and his interpretation of the games rules was as good as any in the NRL in 2004.

In relation to Glen Black, again, good idea. If he was exposed to the NRL he is only going to get better providing us with another top notch international ref who is neutral for the AUS v GB games. He did ok in the tri-series, more exposure here would see him go up another cog I am sure and perhaps appease Wayne Bennett ;-)

Another positive off-season move...now, let's get the ball rolling on this 16th team Mr. Gallop.

Excellent news, let's just hope Russell Smith's adaptation to the way NRL refs work doesn't inspire him to get a full frontal lobotomy, or cause spontaneous cataracts.

Smith is a great ref. 1 or 2 form NZ will be in later in the year.

Gallop has said Glen Black will be reffing NRL later in the year.

Russell Smith is definately a good ref and should be in first grade no probs. If a kiwi ref comes in also later in the season that would be great also. Maybe in a year or 2 we might see a French ref in the NRL. Who knows?

I would like to see Glen Black too, while he isn't as good as the top referee's he is still at a very high standard and is better than many NRL refs.
