He's only picked because he can play in so many positions.

Which position is he good at...and we have 3 fullbacks in the side, not including Morris who could play there if needed. What position is Gidley good at? Hooker...come on, why are we taking Smith off. Backrow, just lol, centres, dear oh dear. I would rather have Lewis on the bench or someone like Wade Graham, who can cover halves and is a damaging backrower. Just see no place for Gidley.

That's the thing we already have Bird who can play in the halves and Lewis who can play in the backs. Why do we need a utility who can't even play in his preferred position in his club?

Weakest kiwi side for some years IMO.

Disagree. Its a weak team without Benji, SBW and an established centre like Matai - but we've fielded far weaker teams in the past 3 years.

i'd contest these lineups were worse with names like Hohaia, Brown, Heremia, Blair, Harrison, Ropati, Sau, Soliola etc:

2011 - Eng v NZ 4 Nations
NEW ZEALAND: 1. Kevin Locke 2. Gerard Beale 3. Lewis Brown 4. Simon Mannering 5. Jason Nightingale 6. Benji Marshall (c) 7. Kieran Foran 8. Ben Matulino 9. Thomas Leuluai 17. Russell Packer 11. Sika Manu 10. Adam Blair 13. Jeremy Smith 12. Alex Glenn 14. Issac Luke 16. Jared Waerea-Hargreaves 18. Elijah Taylor

2010 - ANZAC Test
1. Fullback Lance Hohaia
2. Wing Sam Perrett
3. Centre Junior Sa'u
4. Centre Steve Matai
5. Wing Jason Nightingale
6. Five-eighth Benji Marshall (c)
7. Halfback Kieran Foran
8. Prop Frank-Paul Nu'uausala
9. Hooker Issac Luke
10. Prop Sam Rapira
11. Second-row Bronson Harrison
12. Second-row Zeb Taia
13. Lock Adam Blair
14. Bench Aaron Heremaia
15. Bench Sika Manu
16. Bench Jared Waerea-Hargreaves
17. Bench Ben Matulino
Coach Stephen Kearne

2009 - 4 Nations
1. Lance Hohaia · 2. Sam Perrett · 3. Steve Matai · 4. Junior Sa'u · 5. Bryson Goodwin · 6. Benji Marshall (C) · 7. Nathan Fien
8. Jeff Lima · 9. Isaac Luke · 10. Fuifui Moimoi · 11. Bronson Harrison · 12. Frank Pritchard · 13. Adam Blair
14. Thomas Leuluai · 15. Frank-Paul Nuuausala · 16. Iosia Soliola · 17. Jared Waerea-Hargreaves

2009 ANZAC Test
Lance Hohaia, Sam Perrett, Simon Mannering, Jerome Ropati, Manu Vatuvei, Nathan Fien, Benji Marshall (captain), Roy Asotasi, Issac Luke, Adam Blair, David Fa'alogo, Bronson Harrison, Jeremy Smith. Interchange: Greg Eastwood, Jeff Lima, Jason Nightingale, Iosia Soliola.

He's about 70kgs ringing wet, he shouldn't even be in the nrl. He's only big enough for halfback and no where near good enough at that so why does he even exist?

I'm hoping the World Champions can snag a win, Fearnley was the last wanker coach/selector and Sheens doesn't deserve any better.

Honestly though, Gidley will be lucky to get 10 minutes game time.
And he can play a lot of positions. Thats the reason. I f**k tonne of players could have got that job, just like Jamie Buehrer for NSW (remember that? lol).
If the game is tight, there's no way he'll get on the field in the first half. If it's a blow out, sheens will rest some players and get him out there.

No doubt bro. He is injury cover, pure and simple

A dozen other players could have been picked to do a similar role but Kurt has been there before and it probably got him over the line.

I really dont see it being a huge deal tbh

There were a few players picked who shouldn't be there. Not as egregious as in the past, perhaps, but still, the selection of Thaiday over Hannant and Gidley at all are a bit off.

The lack of specialist props is also a concern. One would think the selectors would have learned their lesson in that regard already, especially since NSW keeps persisting with that failed experiment at Origin level to their continuing detriment.

Personally, i think Jesse Bromwich and Sam McKendry have been playing really good in attack, with some good foot work.
This could be an issue for the kangaroos, as you say, with a lack of specialist front rowers.

Lewis has been shocking this year, Hannant should be in for Lewis, not Thaiday

He hasn't been his best, but he has certainly not been shocking. Trent Merrin has been better than both of them, could be considered unlucky not to get a jersey.

Thaiday is coming off two years worth of pretty ordinary work and is playing prop instead of second-row.

Lewis will at least be playing in the right position.

Thaiday's played two sort of reasonable games this year, but they've been a long time coming and his performance has been seriously lacking. I'm more willing to extend Lewis the benefit of the doubt than I am Sam based on what I've seen to date.
