Possible Drew Brees trade?

Rumors in the NFL now suggest that the San Diego Chargers may trade Drew Brees for a possible first round pick in this years draft and have 2004 first round pick Philip Rivers as the new starting QB for the 2005 season.

This would also give the Chargers three first-round picks in the 2005 NFL Draft. Possible canadiates for the trade are Cleveland, Arizona or Dallas. Still looking for a link but does anyone see this trade going ahead? Three first-round picks could be great for the Chargers, could make them a real powerhouse team in the coming seasons.

Nah i dont see it happening...Bree's performed well and the problem is could it just be a one year thing, i heard the chargers have enough cap room to keep both.

Remember Rivers has yet to play and is still unknown as to whether his going to excel in the nfl.

Bree's on the other hand was sloppy in the past few seasons but last season played extremely well.

Chris Mortensen reported yesterday on ESPN that the Chargers were looking to slap the franchise tag on Brees in order to trade him, with teams like Dallas and San Francisco possible suitors. The prospect of three first round picks seems appealing, but to me it would be just be dumb for a team that has had so little success in recent times to let go of a player who played such a huge role in the rare success they have just had. Plus, it is not like Brees is an old fart either, having only just finished his fourth pro season. If I'm the Bolts, I franchise Brees and if he plays well again next season, I do the long term deal with him and then look into trading Rivers.

Agree with Sunny.

Franchise Brees and go from there. There is no way in hell if I am the GM of the Chargers that I trade Drew Brees after his brilliant 2004 season sending in unheralded 2nd year man Phillip Rivers...the GM would have to put his job on the line if this touted and if it backfired volunteer to fall on his sword.

Rivers is young and knows how to win games..out of the 3 QB's drafted early rivers had the weirdest arm motion but probably the better player..although the claim is can he do what he did in college in the nfl..

Bree's should start next season but rivers is getting paid big dollars to sit on the bench...

If bree's comes in next season and stinks it up..the chargers would of lost a great oppurtunity to gain a 1st round pick..The chargers gotta take a risk this off season.

I quite like Rivers' arm motion, and he made more ncaa starts than anyone else in history, being a four year starter at NC State, so he has quite a resume coming into the pros. I like Rivers and hope he has a good nfl career, he's a player that appeals to me. But Brees led the team to the playoffs this year...Bress has the runs on the board in the pro game, and they should go with Brees.

I think they'll trade Brees for sure if they get three first round picks. Some short term pain for a long term gain if they draft the right players. Obviously, they don't need a running back, so they can literally have the pick of the litter in all positions. A good young WR would be a good start but they overall, they are in fantastic shape.

Winning games in college does not necessarily translate to NFL success, if it did, former Miami Hurricane Ken Dorsey would of be a 1st round pick and not a 7th rounder when he was eligble a couple of seasons ago.

We do not know how Rivers is going to handle the NFL and whether or not he will be able to win football games as he did with NC State. Sure, there are "claims" he can, though I would be certain alot of former 1st round busts carried those claims as wel...time will tell though he is as talented as Manning and Roethlisberger were in college.

If the Chargers dont trade Brees before the draft expect it before the deadline during the season. Why take 3 1st rounders this year, when they can have their 2 and trade Brees for another 1st next year.

They didnt waste a #1 pick on Rivers, just so he can sit on the bench. I dont pay huge amounts of money for stuff I dont use. The Bolts will be the same. It is unfortunate, but they will be ruthless with Brees, anything under 5-1 and he is gone.

Dont forget they have a running back that wins games single handedly, they will take their chances with LT and Rivers.

Do you think that Rivers could be traded if Brees has another great season before the trade deadline?

I really cant see Rivers being traded. The reason they would trade Brees over Rivers is the dact that Rivers is a first rounder and unnoficcial overall #1 pick.

Brees is worth more in the trade market for the simple fact that he has played, and played well, while Rivers has not.

Would you trade a first rounder for an untested second year rookie? If that were the case you would take your chances with selecting your own QB.
