Pre Season games

Happy new year all,

Leeds played Wakefield in a rescheduled preseason game that should have taken place on Boxing day yesterday. We ran away with it going 40-6 up after 60 mins but Wakey rallied in the last 10 with 3 tries to make it look more respectable. It ended up 40-22. Leeds scored with tries from Luke Burgess, Lee Smith x2, Ben Jones-Bishop, Rob Burrow, Kevin Sinfield and Brent Webb. Both teams were far from full strength though with Leeds missing 8 1st team players and Wakey 6 or 7. I liked the new "brand" we played though. It should get the bigger crowds back into Headingley. Win, lose or draw next season it looks like it will be entertaining.

Warrington beat Widnes by a similiar score.

Actually, Warington reserves beat Widnes. :D

Super league, your having a laugh. ;-)

Interesting that the crowd was 4,000, which is higher than some league attendances will be this season. May help convince people that Widnes will improve the super league.

How many were Wire fans though? We managed 12k but it was the combined total for the double header with Carnegie. Saying that they struggle to get 2k normally anyway

Probably about 50-50, not bad considering like your game it was supposed to be on boxing day. So it was re-arranged and in doubt 'till the morning.

Yeah, I think the fact we had 9 1st teamers playing helped too. Its the strongest squad weve had for the "boxing day" game in maybe 10 years. Although up to a couple of years ago we used to get 15k regularly for it. I dont think there was ever a doubt about the game being played though looking at the forcast the week leading upto it. It wasnt that cold and we had the sheets over too. It was officially OK to play on it 36 hours before KO.

decent match v wire, considering we had 7 definate starters out of the 13/17 we did well, defence needs a lot of work but the effort was good and our youngsters were at least even to wires, with man mountain mullally constantly breaking the line and making yards in what could be his last game for us, and danny craven at fullback being superb.

id say there was more widnes fans but only just, iv took pictures of the wire crowd if its possible to put them up on here??

next up new south wales crusaders witch will attract a poor attendance with clashing with manu v liverpool.

ps. solomona deffo still has it

I know you are a Widnes fan and you have to support your team but your youngsters were even in a 32-6 half time score kind of way.

We have some really good youngsters coming through at exactly the right time. Evans on one wing Williams on the other will improve the Welsh team, and we have a few older aussies to teach them a thing or two before they go home next year. Should free up some cap space to get in a Briers replacement also...

Yes, Solo still has it, oh how people mocked when we signed him. :)

our 1-6 were probably definate starters 7-13 were either reserve or bench player and they got battered 1st half by wire who had a mixture of internationals, superleague players and youngsters.
most of our youngsters never came into the game til second half when grant gore came on at 7 lunt at hooker and 16yr old jack owens at fullback who despite playin only 15mins got mom and scored, wire won the second half 18-12 despite playing myler higham etc, is that not good from a widnes point of view?? couldnt of expected more from a team with a cap of 300k compared to whatever a superleague team can spend.

oh about solomona, we were actually laughin he was that good, had 5players hanging off him and he offloaded. how??
