ST GEORGE ILLAWARRA'S premier league season is over after the Dragons fell 31-22 to the Newtown Jets in their sudden death semi finals at Aussie Stadium tonight.
Mick Potter's men fought back bravely in the second half after trailing 24-12 at halftime, at one stage getting within two points before Newtown kicked away with a Jon Green try.
It ends a mixed year for the side, who started the season terribly before fighting their way back to sixth place in the regular season.
After hammering third place Manly 52-12 last week the Dragons couldn't reproduce similar form tonight.
"We just didn't get the rub of the green tonight and most of the bounces of the ball just didn't fall to us," coach Potter said.
"We couldn't win the battle on the ground and the try right before half time really cost us."
"It's hard to look back right now but I guess the season was relatively successful after the start we had. We blooded a lot of Flegg kids and hopefully that has put them in good stead to win their premiership."
Newtown began with plenty of vigour while the Dragons seemed flat and the Jets exploited this after just two minutes.
Jets lock Cameron Ciraldo slipped a clever pass to his skipper Russell Aitken and the young halfback dashed 40 metres up the guts, dummying past Dragons custodian Reece Simmonds on the way to give Newtown an early 6-0 lead.
Six minutes later the Dragons missed a golden opportunity to post some points when Nick Youngquest latched onto a Chris Sheppard grubber but was unable to plant the ball before running over the dead ball line.
Nathan Merritt extended the Jets lead to eight points when he potted a penalty goal before the Dragons got their scoring under way in the 12th minute.
Five-Eighth Daniel Holdsworth placed a deft chip kick towards the in goal, which bamboozled Merritt by bouncing on its point and back into the arms of centre Brett Kelly who touched down.
Only three minutes later the Red V was in the lead when Kelly scored his second.
Once again Holdsworth provided the impetus with a clever inside ball that saw Sheppard in space before the halfback gave Kelly a free run to the line and a 12-8 lead.
But the Dragons couldn't hold the advantage for long with Merritt crossing for his 29th try in premier league this season in the 19th minute and Vince Mellars also crossing in quick time pushing the Jets to an 18-12 lead.
Clifford Manua then scored a soft barge over try nearing halftime and with Merritt's conversion the Jets hit the sheds with a 24-12 lead.
The Dragons needed to be first to score after the break and centre Albert Torrens obliged in the 45th minute.
Torrens sliced through from 40 metres out and dashed away to bring the score back to 24-18.
The burly centre was in the thick of things again with a quarter of the game remaining, again breaking free before sending Youngquest in for his second try.
Holdsworth missed the sideline conversion but the Dragons were within reach at 24-22.
Green's try from the end of a long break by hooker Kevin Kingston gave the Jets an eight-point lead before Aitken put the final nail in the coffin with a late field goal.
NEWTOWN JETS 31 (Russell Aitken, Nathan Merritt, Vince Mellars, Clifford Manua, Jon Green tries; Nathan Merritt 5 goals; Russell Aitken field goal) d. ST GEORGE ILLAWARRA DRAGONS 22 (Nick Youngquest 2, Brett Kelly 2 tries; Daniel Holdsworth 3 goals) at Aussie Stadium.
