14 teams in 1983 when Eels won their third premiership.
Raiders and Steelers had only recently joined the comp, otherwise it was all Sydney teams.

Being all sydney teams doesn't really matter, the fact that there was still Queenslanders and Kiwis relocating to play for those nsw clubs, makes it the same as it is now, the amazing part is the fact that its during a salary capped era... wery wery hard to sustain that amount of quality, maybe it aso has to do with the fact that the cap went up aswell, otherwise we'd have lost more experienced players in the 1-17 roster sooner

I hear you, but there was a strong QLD comp that had many good players in it. To prove the point there are now four Queensland teams and Melbourne runs its junior programmes in QLD too. So that's four and a half QLD teams. That is not the same as saying there were QLD players in the NSW competition back then. Not even close. SOO proved that QLD were competitive. They were always pissed off that NSW looked down their noses at them because they had a few decent teams themselves.

When all is said and done, those great sides can only play what was in front of them. But, the simple fact is the game is more competitive now. Throw in the salary cap and we have just witnessed greatness.

players like Wally Lewis made the QRL a very strong comp in its own right.

No salary cap either, Makes recent achievements weighted more heavily
