Now I know that a few of you guy's would of no doubt read this headline and thought this man needs a neurological assessment. But over the last few weeks I have noticed headlines suggesting we lack muscle up front and other negative thread's related to our forward's.
And whilst this to a certain degree is true,I think the problem's is in the back line.
No,im not talking about there attack,we all know they can attack as they displayed by scoring a 95 metre try late in that game against the Storm.
But massive defensive lapses. The game against the Storm certainly exposed this badly.
You see it's not the forward's fault that Benji misses Slater in the first try scored. And it's not the forward's fault that Covell fail's to take Bell over the sideline allowing Bell to throw the ball inside and allow yet another try.
The same way the forward's cannot be blamed for Orford not being shut down when he get's the short ball away for yet another try. That was only the first half.
Then came the second half. And no one was there to help Benji stop kidwell when he strolled over close to the line not his halfback nor any of the centres. Then there was that shocking pass that Benji nearly through over Prince's head when he was at Dummy half. And certainly the forward's cannot be blamed for the fumble-athon in the in goal when Hodgo missed the ball hence A Kearn's try.But the one aspect that was pleasing was when LaurieDaley said on fox when the score was 30-12 late in the second half "this will test WT if they now pack it in and get smashed or if they pile on point's and make a game of it."
And they know how to make a game of it alright! ;-)
The major problem is that everyone has worked Benji out when it comes to his defence,It's quite simple run not over the top of him because he IS a good front on defender, but go acrossfield then even the slightest of step's or changes in direction will see him come unstuck. As he lack's technique when the player run's with a quick change of direction, and the quicker he gets that Ken McGuinness defending style out of him the better. But this is not only an attack on Benji but a few of our backliner's.
SO LEAVE THE FORWARDS ALONE!!

I get your drift max, Im actually gonna say your right to an extent. Yes we are lapsing in defense for short periods of the game, the other periods of the game our defense is first class.

I however think our problem is we're lapsing in both offense and attack for short periods, last week it was at its most obvious, simple put downs in attack and failing to read plays in defense. I dont think this is necessarily a backline problem but a problem of the team as a whole.

I thnk our side will come good ... the disruption with prince and SOO might have a lot to do with it, and to be honest Marhsall had only played a few games all year (well pretty much all career) its big ask to expect him to run a side. It will come good.

cheers

Who was it that not so long ago, said he was sick of excuses. You say the disruption with Prince and SOO may have something to do with it,firstly Prince was playing against Melbourne and secondly how does that effect Benji's turnstile tackling method.

yeah I think the backline has defensive problems--we have three little blokes, close to the action prince marshall and fitzy-teams like melbourne line the big units up them, makes it pretty hard--but in defence of benji-he dosnt lack ticker, just style and that will come--I think fullback would have been his go to find his feet, but with hogo you could not do that-a dood defensive bloke (BIG) in the centre would help.I think we are about two or three years away from being a gun outfit-so i think sheens should be looking at a quick fix--a class centre

So what do you do with Dean Collis and Bronson Harrison? They already stand out in Premier League everytime they play.If you braught a centre which would hold them back even longer and almost certainly force them to go to another club in which they would be guaranteed a start. If this was the case, they would come back to burn us,that is for sure!!!

Benji missed two. The inside pass from Bell came about after Super was trying to cover his own man and Benji's. Benji is gone, problem solved.

Can't remember who,but someone had mentioned on another thread that Benji gone maybe a blessing in disguise and I hate to admit it but at this stage in his career he may just well be right!!
Once he get's the knowledge with time he'll be right. 8)

I'm with you max. WIth a good chance to bulk up and be ready for season 2005, it might not be all doom and gloom for Benji to be out just now.

To be honest its shocking that he's out now because it does hurt our finals chances. But yeah we gotta find a positive in all this and i also believe that positive is that instead of having that disrupted pre season, he shouldn now get a full one in which will benefit him, especially with things such as bulking up and speed work.

I'VE SAID ON NUMEROUS OCCASION'S!!!!That I love Benji's attacking prowess. And I would be very dissapointed if he left us one day. But the reality is he has to bulk up,correct his defence and stop stepping every second, that's all.

And how does he go about gaining that such Knowledge whilst sitting on the sidelines ????

How does he exactly go about improving his tackle style ????

Him missing is far from a Blessing in disguise!

The knowledge he gain's would be like every other player MT through the premier league not at the expense of a first grade side.
His tackling style would be taught via the above method and special coaching, because let me say this, once some kid's lose there confidence some never recover again. And go on to be nothing other than good touch footy player's.
Sorry if I offend anyone by writing what I think, but it's only my opinion.!

But how does one do such a thing whilst he is injured on the sidelines ????

His injury isn't a blessing in disguise and if anything it will slow his progress of reaching the potential he does have!

He does'nt need to be on the field to bulk up and when he does he will be ready for the PL and there he will learn to tackle and there he will gain knowledge. It is pointless making the semi's if we are going to let in an abundance of tries.
