Watching this NSW Cup match between BRET and Storm and he is handling this game very well, he hasn't made a dud call yet and hasn't pissed me off most importantly (might I add BRET are behind in the penalty count right now).

Having a former NRL player as a ref is a great idea, promote the man NOW! What's the hold up, he's a great ref.

NO!You can't just walk into first grade if you played in the NRL.He hasn't even proven himself or come up through the Reps squad.

Says you. He's a great ref. To hell with formalities. He knows what he's doing and he has a better understanding of the ebb and flow of the game than these jokes running around in pink this year.

I respect that you give up yur time to officiate is borne out of a love for the game, but that attitude is exactly why refs are so despised. Its not about the refs FFS! Its about the players - that is who we go to see. If someone is more cpaable of officiating a game in a manner that is more conducive to an open match then they should be in ASAP.Screw the refs club - more former players blowing the whisle is far preferrable to a bunch of blokes who have no feel for the game whatsoever.

Bring him and Henry Perenara through ASAP.

Yeh Henry is good, I reffed with him when he first started.

Also that guy who played in the centres for souths for a bit after coming back from England. Forget his name. Refed his kid one day, he was the dad on the side line, the next year he signs up to be a ref.

Its better having former players refing.

The telecast did not show alot of stuff he missed in the game in terms to players off side right in front of him etc.

That and from what I can gather and appointments of last year to this year NSW Cup reffs get trialled in Toyota Cup first before even being considered for NRL. ala Gavin West

Give him a go. He can't do any worse than the clowns they have running around at the moment.

The NRL should do more to encourage former players to take up officiating once they retire, similar to what the ACB have put in place 10 years ago in the cricket.

I asked John Brady about that three years ago & he said they were putting programs in place. Three years later we have exactly two former NRL players reffing.

Good work John.

The problem with that though is that unlike Cricket umps, RL refs need to maintain a fairly high level of fitness. Something that many long term NRL players are unable or unwilling to maintain once their careers are over.

Therefore the pool of former players is alot smaller and will probably always be targetted at players forced to retire early (Phillips) or who were fringe first fraders and want to remain in the game (Perenara).

But i agree they could be making more effort in encouraging these former players to become refs.
