In the long run, it would be better if the Southern Orcas bid team got together with the Warriors, News Ltd and the NZRL and established a professional NZ comp. As mentioned by someone else it could be a 8 team comp and at the start of the year the NRL teams and kiwi teams could play in a knockout/round-robin.
Also, the NZ comp would draw $$$ from australian pay tv, many people would like to watch it. Then the ultimate goal would be to have a 3 test series mid-year (perhaps one day origin would wind back to one game a year).
In the long run, NZRL and international RL would be better off.
How's that for thinking before i post?

It wouldnt rely on getting a aussie pay tv audience. It would be an added bonus, and why wouldn't News Ltd (the ones who run FOX) put into it if they had a 50% share in the NZ comp just like they do with the NRL.
Read my idea (and that's all it is, an idea) and think long term.

Can you all tell me how three new clubs will survive if some of the current clubs are having trouble?

You all preach that you are only thinking about the success of Rugby League and then in the same breath either condem Melb, suggest we add 3 new teams or both.

How about we get this current comp strong before we add a new club that will just fold in a few years anyway?

 oh my god.

The idea is basically News Ltd and NZRL investing in the creation of a league that would soon attract sponsors, owners, interest from everywhere. News bankrolled the ESL to get it going (yes it's a bigger market place but the NZ comp would be on a smaller scale).

You'll eventually see the ARU setting up a national comp, it will start from scratch. Soccer Australia are in the process of seting up fresh. The NZRL/newsltd idea is needed, especially if there will soon be professional rugby comps on both sides of the tasman soon. Having one or even 2 token NZ sides in the NRL isn't going to help NZRL in the long run. It will only keep it on life support.

So your isea is basicly ignore the orca's kick out the Warriors and hope for the best?????

Just a few questions regarding the holes in your idea....
1) Why would news want to fund the comp? Unlike Aussie, the Pay TV market in NZ is already mature. They wont be able to make any more money in NZ
2) Who are these "sponsors, owners" that will be attracted? Rugby already has most of the major corporations tied to sponsoship deals.
3) Do realise the cost of even an 8 team comp to compete with the NRL? It would need a similer wage bill to attract and keep players....8 x 3.5Mil = 28Million. The entire NZRL income is a fraction of that currently.

It wouldn't compete with the NRL in the begining. But with the Warriors group, the Orcas mob and perhaps four others a decent comp could be set up. Rather than the NZRL going up and down with one(or 2) NRL team.

If it couldn't compete for plyers why would anybody want to play in it or watch it???? Face it your idea wont ever work

I'd love to see Dolphs, Bears, and Orcas in ASAP and then suck in Perth and Adelaide by end of decade

I don't know that talent is the major problem though, isn't it CASH ??

The NRL has a finite pool of funds to give to clubs, the more clubs the smaller the quantity given to each club.

Unless you have self-sustainable new clubs e.g. Bears with Singleton then new clubs WILL fail unless the NRL can cash them up, which of course would come at the detriment of other clubs....... :(

When NRL re-negotiates FTA TV deal THEN they might have the cash to make expansion a LOT more feasible.

In short the NRL should look at whether or not it can afford to give each existing club less to let expansion teams in?
If so then they should ensure the expansion teams can survive financially during 5 initial seasons i.e the Bears can with their Monetaray guaranteed backing?

If answer to both of above is yes then LEt them in and grow this great sport. Let's not forget to market like crazy in Melbourne and ensure they have to show prime-time league down there with the new FTA deal
