I heard at the start of the year that the NSWRL were trying to get one game a week on Fox Sports? to make the cup more regonised and respected? will this be happening next season?

supposedly the ABC also wanted to broadcast a game a week but this was stopped by Channel Nine who have rights to all NSWRL competitions although choose not to broadcast any games but the grand final.
i have heard rumours suggesting fox sports will implement a 24 hour rugby league channel within the next few years much the same as the current afl channel and the jim beam cup would surely feature amongst these games.
i see no reason why the Jim Beam Cup should not be shown on tv. games are filmed weekly anyways so all thats needed would be commentary and for that matter id be happy to do it myself free of charge if it meant getting the jim beam cup on tv.
publicity continues to grow though with the Jim Beam Cup gaining decent coverage this year in rugby league press, local media and the grand final coverage on channel nine. i think windsors games are also broadcast on local radio.
internet coverage is also at a all time high.
i personally would love to see a weekly match of the round every friday night with a delayed broadcast on saturday or sunday afternoon on the abc.

the Owls are definately gone. they may be back some day but definately not next year. i might found out more this sunday when i attend the end of year Jim Beam Cup presentation. manly may actually enter a team in the Jim Beam Cup next year and are currently making a decision on the matter. the team will most likely be a Sea Eagles side made up of the best young local talent. they have been in attendance at recent meetings and the final decision should be made soon. i cant remember exactly when the comp commenced this year though next year with it looking to be a 14 team comp that means 26 rounds meaning it should be alligned with the nrl comp. if not though you should at least be able to attend a jets trial match at henson park. and on who i will support next year im yet to decide. probably wont know to after the season starts to see what team i like. i'll probably see where most of the guildford boys are going then see what happens. might support cabra cause i know one of the players or even windsor due to their crowds or st marys cuz i like thier facilities. yet to decide. its a big call. may not even follow any team but will continue to support the comp. i now enjoy it more than the nrl.

Thats great news about manly they sent a combined manly comp side to england recently. It would be a great way to incorpate a kiwi squad.

I think TV coverage should go to Premier League before it goes to JB Cup.

Premier League is a lot like the old Sydney RL comp with clubs like Norths, Newtown, Balmain and Wests. It would have more appeal in Sydney and especially in country NSW. That's not to say JB Cup isn't worthy of TV. I'm just saying where I think the first option should go.

both comps have their benefits but id personally prefer to see jim beam cup.
premier league is primarily a reserve grade competition and therefore lacks support as all the supporters of clubs who are fielding reserve sides in pl care little for the comp as all that matters to them is their first grade side.
you suggest the likes of newtown, norths, balmain and wests would attract good television audiences but i doubt this having been to leichardt oval to watch balmain this year and nso to watch the bears.
these teams supporters have left them. higher crowds can be found from most jbc clubs.
who seriously would want to watch say roosters v raiders in premier league?
i doubt many fans from these clubs would watch this game and the league public would also most likely ignore it.
why bother when you can watch these teams in the NRL?

Jim Beam cup would be better for TV as crowds have been very positive in the first season, espeicaly for certain Central Coast sides.

JB cup live on ABC saturday arvo would be magic especialy as it would mean them getting rid of that other rugby.

I can see it now 3,000 at the Entrance live around the state on the national broadcaster.

The quality of JBC is actually weaker than Metro from the 90's. As someone who has seen a lot of Metro and JB the old comp was stronger.

I don't know if I should be offended by this or laugh.

SOME supporters of clubs who are fielding reserve grade sides in pl care little for the comp
and SOME of balmains supporters have left them, on the other hand some of us are still faithful.

point taken brook.
but you know as well as i do the extent of balmains support in premier league.
and this is one team that is not simply a reserve grade side. eg. the raiders,bulldogs,roosters.....
the crowds on a saturday for the tigers games are poor but i suppose you could say the same about the hawks, who in my opinion are the least supported club in the jbc.
but the thing is who is going to be supporting balmain in ten years time? in my trips to leichardt oval the crowd has consisted of elderly people in the majority and it seems balmain isnt encouraging any further support at this time?
and bluebag i've been following the comps since 2000 so my knowledge is limited though the comp is much more close these days and the more teams involved furthers peoples interest in the comp.
its a much more supportable comp now.

Mal,

How was the Owls presentation yesterday. You are correct the comp is more supportable now but the quality of football is lower. The old Metro was allowed to limp along for too long and this current format is improved with more team. I pity those who have to travel from the Coast to Narellan though.

the Owls presentation yesterday was interesting to say the least.
a limited number of directors was in attendance and there was a ill feeling held towards the other directors, my guess the ones who voted to exclude the Owls from the JBC.
this was highlighted by Paul Broadbent after winning the A-Grade best and fairest award saying something along the lines of:
'.....this isnt directed at you tony but to the directors whats happened is bullshit...(a bit of muttering)... its f**ked'.
following this there was a large cheer around the room.
Darren Seymour is staying on as A-Grade coach though i dont know of any of the Jim Beam Cup players staying around.
A decent sized group is heading to Woy Woy and consists of Chris Yates, Nathan Carr, Jason Small, 'Harry', and possibly Aaron Milan.
Another group is heading to Narrellan though i dont know who exactly and the only other movement i know of is Weller Huaraki being signed for the Eels for jersey flegg.
Nathan Carr was awarded the JB Cup best and fairest, Chris Yates the best forward, and Chris Tolar the best back.
Yatesy also said if Guildford are to come back he'll be back and will do his best to get the team back.
Tony Metcalfe, the manager and also director, is also resigning following next year.

The club swings back and forth to be honest

they are entering a team in the sevens this year which is the first sign of some spirit I've seen from them in a while

I still haven't given up hope in the club waking up and finding some pride in itself - the balmain membership is now consisting almost entirely of those that have retained their loyalty for balmain rather than those 100% behind the jv to the exclusion of balmain who have mostly let their membership lapse

the more of us that start to put some pressure on the board, the more chance we have of stuff getting done

the biggest hurdle at the moment is balmains financial problems - I think thats whats behind the closer ties with ryde-eastwood (this year we are training together and sharing players)

I'd rather have Premier League on TV over JBC any day of the week. Higher standard of play and greater clubs. Crowds are irrelevant. Look to who would get more viewers and more appeal. If we're talking the ABC, think of the bush. More country folk care about Balmain vs Souths then Narellan vs Windsor. The JBC teams have a very limited local appeal. Even within these localities (Central Coast) there are scores of fans o NSWRL clubs with a representation in Premer League. It makes sense.
