Punishment for poor nines squads

Penrith & Melbourne look like they have given us 2 very weak squads that don't comply with the clubs requirements for the tournament.

To many this is disappointing as a lot of people have bankrolled this concept from the promoters to the sponsors not to mention the fans who would spend anywhere from $150-$250 for tickets and hundreds more on accommodation and costumes.

Should there be some serious punishment for them??

If so... What would be an effective punishment??

Fines?? To be honest... Would that even work? I reckon some clubs would be happy to cop a fine...

How about a deduction of maybe 1 or 2 regular season points?? That could be a bit too harsh... But it could be effective.

Something I was thinking about today... Which maybe controversial... How about a negative mark that club has to carry for the regular season... which acts as the first tie breaker when teams are level on the table. It supersedes even for and against.

For example... Let's say Penrith and Newcastle finishes equal 4th and 5th on 30pts... Penrith would automatically drop down to 5th as they have that Mark against them... Even if they have a better for and against.

Thoughts??

Their punishment is they wont win.
Is that enough though??

There are teams like the Warriors, Manly, Newcastle, Souths etc... Who have played ball and have named very good strong sides and only 1 of them can win..

I don't think it's fair for the other clubs who have done the right thing and made the effort to send good squads over for the league just let it slide.

Look at Newcastle... Jarrod Mullen's season was ruined by his injury he picked up at the nines... Yet they made him available again this season.

How fair is it that some teams play ball for the good of the game and others just ignore it because it doesn't suit there own interests.

Im not gonna just pick on Penrith here... I mean look at the Storm... They plunder NZ's playing talent by the plane load... Yet when it comes to doing something that will actually help grow the game in NZ old bellyache is having a whinge...

9's should have absolutely no impact on the regular season and the teams should be able to enter any team they wish. I'd have no minimum requirements.

Needs clubs to be fair dinkum and support it to be legitimate and bring in the $'s. NRL should stipulate a stronger min number of first squad and enforce the 5 star player rule. There is a significant discretionary funding going to clubs, hit them $100k if they don't meet the criteria.

But isn't that how the RL sevens concept died??

The NRL need to be very careful here that they don't kill this concept while it's still in its infancy.

I agree that the nines should have no bearing whatsoever on the regular season... But when you have some clubs hurting the concept by fielding weakened squads maybe the only way to make them fall into line with the rest of the league is to punish them where it really hurts... Which is in the regular season.

just lobside the prize money to the winners, runners up, semi finalists, basically give 80% (or more) of the prize money to the 8 teams that get out of the group stages and let the other clubs go home broke.

2.4 mil all up and apparently the winner only gets about 450k. the clubs only turning up to make up numbers must also be getting a fair bit. Anyone got the exact split?

OP is based on the assumption that teams aren't meeting the criteria? How can that be proven?

And if either squad make the semis or final, what them? Fine gets reversed?

The NRL know the value of there contracts... They will know if they comply or not.

If they make the semis they should still be punished... As they were contractually obliged to provide a certain squad...

If the kids they throw in do well,,. They good on them... But that will be down to luck not design.

I'm a bit disappointed in the Panthers side but their's still a few things to look forward to like Moss (who is first quality fullback who needs to leave us to get a shot, Canberra should be all over him) Api and George Jennings. I would have liked to Moylan play in the halves but I understand why he wasn't picked.

The sad thing is teams like the panthers and the tigers are sending D-list squads, and a week later will probably roll out all the big guns for a rigorous 80 minute trial game infront of a crowd of 200 in the bush somewhere.

Nines has the potential to sell out Homebush if it's done properly with every team fielding a full strength team.

I agree with the above poster that the prize money should be lopsided to favour the teams that do well. It's the clubs that are sending strong squads that are attracting all the crowds and revenue. It's not really fair that a NSW cup team get an almost equal portion of the prize money as a club sending a team that brings in the revenue.

Agree, and some of these teams of inexperienced youngsters just might do well. I'm sure anyone who runs out in a Panther jersey will believe they can win each game.
There's good prize money if clubs decided to risk their stars.
Last year some of the highly rated sides had their pants pulled down and were left wondering what happened. Nines is a different ball game.

Jason Taylor was asked about the Tigers 9's squad on The Grill Team yesterday, he stated that he has implemented large changes at the Tigers and it is more important that the team is focused on the NRL season than the 9's. I can completely understand his rational.

As long as the teams are sending contracted players then I believe they should be able to send whoever they want to play. Maybe we should fine the Sharks for continuing to play Blake Ashyford even though he is clearly not NRL standard?

So in other words he doesn't want to injure any of his players, which is every coaches concern. He only has to name 2 or 3 high profile players and barely play them and people would be a little less critical.

Its about growing the game after all. Taking it seriously is one way to do it. Give it time and it'll catch on. Everyone thought Origin was a joke when it started up, its now the biggest sporting event in Australia.

as for your blake ashyford argument, im not sure what to say there. wtf are you on about?

Teams like the tigers are mad for not having a proper crack at the nines. They're no hope of doing anything else this year.

Fans of clubs who treat it like a joke should bombard their clubs with criticism. But they won't because most probably have the same attitude as the coaches and admin. A shit one.

Fortunately as long as it's in Auckland the warriors are the team that matters most and they take it very seriously.

It was a joke, people want to fine teams for sending below quality squads, well blake ashyford is a below quality player that the Sharks keep playing in the NRL.

There is a slight difference between this and Origin, in origin there was one group of people who didn't think it was a joke, the Queensland players. If the Queensland player had of treated it as a joke then we wouldn't have what we have now. Now with the 9's there would be very few players, especially the star players you all want to play, and teams that take this concept seriously. That is your problem, no amount of fines or punishments are going to make the players treat this anymore than it is, its a novelty event and a fun way to start the season.

I can't wait for the 9's next weekend but lets not make this out to be on par with origin.
