QLD running into form at the right time?

QLD have been very average for much of the season, but their current team structure looks good and they may be hitting form at the right time, ala NSW last season.

They are currently 0-154 of 17 overs against WA, with both openers on 73 not out from 55 deliveries. Unless its an exceptional batting strip, one suspects that the sandgropers will be in a bit of strife here.

You'd have to think the banan-benders will be hard to toss in the upcoming Pura Cup game as well.

Maher just blew it, out for 187 with plenty of time to get a double.

A bit of funny stuff by the cric-info scorer though, it read:

43.1 Edmondson to Maher, OUT: bit of cross slog straight to the brown nosed gnome standing at mid on

a few seconds later it refreshed and was replaced by:

43.1 Edmondson to Maher, OUT: bit of cross slog straight to Langer at mid on

I wonder who the scorer goes for?????

WA's response was a meagre 198.

The Bulls get 2 extra points for doubling their opponent's score and jump into second place on 28 points (1 behind WA & 5 in front of Victoria, who play Tassie today).

I have seen more than 400 scored off 50 overs before - but obviously never at such a high level and on a ground that isn't small. The day I was there the side made 440 from 50 overs at the run-rate of 8-and-a-bit.

Paul Wilson was the only W.A bowler to emerge with respectibility - 1/53 from 10. His opening partner Darren Wates went for 10 runs an over, similarly Kade Harvey (0/81 from 8 overs) was monstered.

Andy Bichel's 2/37 (10) may serve in saying something to the national selectors about how sensible it was to drop him - I agreed with the move but to his credit he bounced back well.

Noffke's 1/24 from 9 was also impressive, and James Hopes (2/44) produced yet another decent performance from his 10 overs - I'm surprised his name hasn't been floated around as a player for higher honours because statistically he has bowled well for a couple of seasons in domestic One Dayers.

W.A never had a chance of chasing those runs though.

Langer outraged by online comments

By Len Findlay

JUSTIN LANGER spoke at length last night with Cricket Australia officials and his manager, Rob Joske, about possible action after an internet slur was directed at him during Friday night's ING Cup match in Brisbane.

And Western Warriors coach Wayne Clark is demanding that Cricket Australia take action over the insult which was made online as the Warriors were thrashed by Queensland at the Gabba.

Cricinfo, an online service run by Wisden and licensed to Cricket Australia, recorded Queensland batsman Jimmy Maher's dismissal: "Edmondson to Maher, OUT: bit of a cross slog straight to the brown nose gnome at mid-on".

The Warriors captain was fielding in that position and took the catch to dismiss Maher, who had made a one-day record score of 187 in his team's 4-405.

"Pretty ignorant," was the WA captain's comment. "I don't know who did it, but we want to get to the bottom of this."

Langer, who was out for a duck in WA's reply of 198, did not know about the comment until informed by the media the next day.

"I'm pretty ignorant about what can be done about this," Langer said. "But it was verydisappointing."

He has not decided what action to take, but the WA camp will not let the matter rest.

Clark was as angry as Langer, and made his feelings known. "We will make sure something is done," he fumed. "This is unacceptable."

Yesterday, as WA began a four-day Pura Cup match against Queensland, Clark said: "We will be taking this to the nth degree to make sure it is fixed up."

Cricket Australia has ordered an investigation and the website scorer who keyed in the remark was not on duty yesterday.

Attempts to contact the ruling body yesterday were unsuccessful.

It is believed Cricket Australia has already spoken to officials of baggygreen.com, which carries the Cricinfo live scoring service, and that Wisden regional general manager Adrian Motherway has apologised "unequivocally" to Langer.

Langer's weekend did not get a lot better yesterday.

After Queensland had made 362 in its first innings, Langer elected to send in a nightwatchman to open the innings with him.

But Ben Edmondson, who had bowled 21 overs in the Queensland innings, was out second ball, lbw to Andy Bichel, leaving WA on 1-0.

Captain Maher described as staggering the decision to open the batting with a bowler who had sent down most overs on the day.

Its all but over for VIC in the ING Cup now, with the side needing to smash WA in its remaining game to claim the 4 points for a win + the bonus point. Even this would still only leave them equal on points with QLD, who would have to lose their final game. In an ideal world, both QLD & VIC would win, resulting in a QLD home final against WA.

Its not looking as good for QLD in the Pura Cup atm though. WA are cruising at 4/233 and should be able to get through for first innings points. With TAS struggling against the VICs, the 2 points are only heightened in value for QLD, as even if first innings win would put them within 2 points of TAS on the table (assuming the Tigers lose). Were TAS to again go pointless in the final game, and QLD were to again get first innings points, then QLD would ease through to the final (assuming NSW did not win both its remaining games outright).

Plenty to play for, that's for sure!
