Soward will never be a "more then capable defender" imo. Not many halves are.

Soward has improved out of sight the past two years. I wouldn't have him in the top bracket for defenders though.

I'd say there are more than a few halves who are good defenders - Cronk, Pearce, Foran, Cherry, Mullen, Wallace, Widdop, Reynolds.

That said there are a few who can only be described as absolute tripe defensively on a footy field - Sandow, Prince, Thurston, Williams.

Quade Cooper would make the next list down known as the "Scott Dureau Type Defender" who have the ability to lose a game for their team just on their defensive deficiencies -week in, week out.

He'd go no worse in defence than Soward, his issues are mainly technique, he's not small or weak. Overall he is very much better than some other alleged halves in the NRL.
