Has there ever been a case of the two teams appearing in one season's Super Bowl not even qualifying for the finals in the next season?

I ask that considering that Tampa Bay are 7-8 and Oakland are 4-10.

Considering that these two teams were very good last season (based on one game's observation from myself!) and have been brought back to the field somewhat, it makes a good argument for a salary cap and draft (Roosters fans take note)

I know Denver missed the playoffs in 1999 but i'm not sure on the Falcons that year. Does anyone know if the Falcons missed the playoff in 1999? I think there is a good chance they did.

IMO, the NFL have the perfect system which promotes parity but you need high numbers playing the game to get the kind of competition they have.

Yes the Falcons also failed to make it. I think they finished 5-11 after losing Jamal Anderson for the season in after the first game.
Over recent years a fairly common trend in the NFL has been for teams failing to make the playoffs the previous year playing the superbowl the next year and Superbowl winning teams failing to make it the year after.
