Queue jumper: Zappia's positional play offside with Eels fans
May 22, 2009 - 12:15AM

EMBATTLED Cronulla chief executive Tony Zappia was given an official written warning from his previous employer, the Parramatta football club, for organising an employee to jump a long queue in 2005 to secure hard-to-get finals tickets.

And the tickets - about 30 in all - were for his friends and associates, including Roy Spagnolo, who last month was elected president of the new-look Parramatta Leagues Club board.

Spagnolo and Zappia are firm friends, and there is continuing speculation that Zappia will be recruited by the Eels board to replace the incumbent Denis Fitzgerald.

But the Herald understands that four years ago there was enormous consternation surrounding the ticket queue-jumping among the Eels' season ticket holders, it almost caused a riot. The security staff at the Leagues Club had to restore order.

The finals match in question involved the then minor premiers Parramatta playing eighth-placed Manly. Tickets for the match were under the control of the NRL, and distributed through Ticketek. However, season ticket holders had a short window before the public release to secure a limited number of seats.

Zappia, who was the club's football manager at the time, was reprimanded by the Eels, who detailed in the official warning their concern about him abusing his position.

The club was concerned that Zappia had organised for his assistant to go straight to the front of the queue at the ticket office in the Leagues Club to purchase the tickets just before the designated selling period was to begin.

The queue was more than 100 metres long and had snaked outside, around the club and up to O'Connell Street. Some supporters had camped overnight.

The fury that erupted when the employee tried to get in first was ferocious, said Eels sources. It prompted an immediate investigation by the then Eels chief Fitzgerald.

Jesus Christ, talk about laying the boot in....

leagues problem is that too many of the people that report on the game only look for negatives

Magnay rarely writes anything positive and has gone back to 2005 to find a negative

why not look for a positive from the past day or week?

it's not that hard

It's ridiculous the amount of sh*t that they drag up about league, but not other sports. They're like a dog with a bone...they drag a story out as long as they can if it's negative. We had the issue with the same thing in 2006...any minor thing was front page news. I recall a story on the back page about Tim Smith being out drinking at a pub, when he was drinking water  And now this whole Sharks thing....it's just ludicrous

Payback, perhaps?

What do I mean?

Well, Spags and Zaps struck a deal:

Spags: Hey, Zaps, help me jump this queue and stuff.
Zaps: Pffft, what do I get out of it?
Spags: Um, I dunno. I'll, like, run for the LC board and stuff and then get rid of Fitzy and make you CEO.
Zaps: Sweet, dude, but you'd bloody better do it. You owe me one big time for this.

I think this will turn into a MUCH bigger story once Danny Weidler reads this post.

I wonder who told her about this?

Someone wanting to try and hit Roy Spagnolo in the crossfire?

well...

when you're uner the pump like he is, even the most minor stories are big stories, it wouldn't matter if he farted in public...it's still a big story.

Offcourse, we'd laugh at this one had it broke about a couple of weeks ago.

I must admit, I don't know the Zappia personally and have never spoken to him, but I'd take Fitzy over him any day of the week. Having heard him speak on the footy show, he sounds like an absolute twit. Can't believe he's made it to CEO at any club.

Well we can all talk about this being old news, laying the boot in etc, but it is still pretty ordinary if it did happen. He was shafting his own teams supporters.

I am surprised most of you don't think much of it. Obviously none of you were in the line!
