Rabbitohs lead charge for US season opener
Send via Email
A west coast venue featuring two clubs which traditionally draw bumper television ratings is considered the perfect recipe for an American NRL season opener as a number of Sydney clubs privately explore the possibility of starting next year's campaign abroad.
A day after NRL chief executive Todd Greenberg outlined plans to launch either the 2019 or 2020 season in one of the most competitive sporting markets in the world, several Sydney clubs Fairfax Media spoke to on Friday registered interest in spearheading the push into America.

While South Sydney would be considered the frontrunner to kick off a new season in an embryonic rugby league market, there is likely to be no shortage of suitors to travel across the Pacific launch a new season in a foreign land.
Many club bosses warned they wanted to see a more detailed long-term strategy about how to penetrate the North American space before the 2025 World Cup, rather than a hit-and-run mission at the beginning of the year.
The NRL's official broadcast rights holders Nine and Fox Sports have given their backing for the concept, but would need the right ingredients for the American incursion to be a success.
The Rabbitohs' obvious pulling power with one of the largest membership bases in the NRL and vast television reach makes them a suitable drawcard, not to mention their previous willingness to travel abroad for World Club Challenge matches and playing Super League visitors Wigan in an international doubleheader in Sydney last month.
