It does not matter if it is good or bad coverage in what is written as long as its factual

and that is my point, instead of waiting for the factual media releases from the club, r/s interviewed their own typewriters and released crap, hearsay and supposition.

i,m not sticking up for watson although i do personally feel hes done a great job and will continue to do it now that hes soley warriors orientated.
his pr skills may leave a lot to be desired if you are a reporter ( or more to the point, a reporter who has crossed him) but the guy has the clubs intrest at heart and for that i respect him.

interesting what PDB said about mick at the butchers lounge,, our daughter was a ball boy/girl there for a while last season and while waiting for her to get changed after the game along comes mick, sits himself down beside me and yakked for about 10-15 mins. no b/s, just footy talk.
he seemed very interested in this website.

first time i ever had occasion to meet the man. first impressions .

anyway, back to the subject,,, devlin should be shot with a ball of his own shit :D

and well put iafeta, you have changed my opinion :|

Ozzie bro, Radio Sport is a tabloid news media. They're always going to go for the controversies, most talk shows do primarily because that gets people interested. Think of Jerry Springer or Rikki Lake as a talk show, or even a lot of political coverage on say Newstalk ZB. Its not always favourable, the media will sit back, wait, and attack like vultures. Thats a given, whether Mick keeps the vultures off the door step or not, they're still going to make comment. If you choose to push them away, they'll make far worse comments.

Some of what a lot of critics have said on the Warriors is dead right, the Lauitiiti affair was a shambles, a lot of fans did stop coming because of it, the Anderson affair was a cover-up debacle, the Jones/Betham so called press release was a joke (Imagine Brett Kimmorley saying he'd lost all his pace!!! ), the website is a disgrace, the players fitness is dead set atrocious, the lack of middle management accountability has been dreadful. Spiro Tsiros appeared on the news following Ali's offer of a release with a beaming smile on his face, not really the impression I wanted to see from the club at all. I expect some dignity and integrity, not a show of arrogance.

I've got no doubt Mick Watson overall has done a good job with the Warriors, his skills have been on performance and the financial aspect. But sooner or later we need to look beyond that and how he is able to get himself perceived amongst the core shareholder, the public. Currently the perception of him is ordinary, and that goes part and parcel with ticket sales etc. Mick needs to spread some positive news, clean up the Warriors administration and get involved in what truly makes this club great, not get petty and focus on aspects he simply cannot control, aspects that the only thing he can do is add further fuel to the fire instead of dowsing them. Co-operate with the media which is the publics watchdog, and get some positive spin doctoring going. Beat up the Koomwaiyou rumours if he must, beat up the positive form of Paleaaesina, beat up Steve Price's continued form for the Bulldogs, beat up the family spirit and effort that helped sway Price and Wiki to the Warriors, tell us more about the Warriors work in the community - work with Allan Mac, Willie Lose, Richard Becht etc to get the public to understand the good sides of all of these things, rather than further fuel scandals.

I'm sure from your thoughts Oz, and your memories of him talking to you and other great fans of the club that Mick does hold the Warriors best interests at heart and he is a decent man, he has to find the right way to portray that to his major shareholder, the fans. Currently, he is not.

Hindsight is wonderful sight but if I think back, didn't most of the woes currently
afflicting the Warriors start about the time Mr Tsiros came aboard........

Ozbash - - #-o #-o

When things go well, you get good coverage. When things go badly you get bad coverage. The media are interested in ratings, not fact. I like Devlin, he has opinions and he expresses them, and he's bagged pretty much everone when they've deserved it.

He was one of the first to be asking serious questions about the Warriors this year, and those questions needed asking. If Mick Watson's life becomes uncomfortable because of that then so be it.

In the real world you cannot ban media, or ignore them. Even Wayne Bennett has realised that. Sport (any sport) needs publicity. What's happened with the Warriors this year is a test of character, and IMO the character of the players and the management has been found wanting.

If you don't like radio sport - turn the radio off - simpe as that!

I'm sorry, but when posting here I don't pay that much attention to my typing.

Your defensive, conspiracy driven, anti-Australian, insular mind-set is both amusing and sad.

And yeah, I like Devlin - he's entertaining. I disagree with him a lot of the time, but am not so sensitive that I take it personally and start threads on websites about it.

Have you considered therapy?

The media are the epitome of hypocrisy. They love you when you're winning and they'll kick you when you're down. Take all forms of media with a grain of salt.

I gave up listening to Radio Sport a long time ago. Who wants to listen to all the pro rugby bullshit. Listen to some good rocking tunes instead. And if you have a TV, what the hell are you listening to the radio for anyway???

Of course they are. But the point is they don't have to be sycophantic cheer-leaders who refuse to do anything but support a particular team or code.

The amount of attention rugby gets annoys me, but in saying that it hasn't always been positive over the last few years. But the fact remains, it is our national sport for better or worse, so get used to it.

You're saying Mick Watson is beyond reproach, always honourable, never hypocritical, and that his attitude of "you say nice things about me/us, or we'll bar you" is the right one.

It's like the kid who packs up his bat and ball and runs home because he can't get a bat!

Ozbash, you just have to accept the truth. Radio Sport is a talkback station, do you really think they would get many listeners if it was based around boring old talk of Mick Watson?

No. Try and think from other perspectives as well.

Can you please point out where I said that??? Or am I sending out those damn subliminal messages again

Look, if Mick Watson wants to ban these media types and give them the cold shoulder then that's fine. I just hope he doesn't want media coverage in the future.

Come to think of it, this is really the first time the new management of the Warriors have come under fire from the media. They don't seem to know what has hit them and are reacting badly to it. Unfortunately the media are a bunch of crack whores and there's nothing anyone can do about it

Warriors wake up to a new PR nightmare
By Chris Mirams
August 1, 2004
The Sun-Herald

The beleaguered New Zealand Warriors have settled a dispute with Kiwi station Radio Sport, but are still at loggerheads with the New Zealand Herald and have replaced their media liaison officer.

The club is enduring a PR disaster that mirrors its woeful on-field performances. Since New Zealand's Sunday Star Times reported the Warriors' aggressive attitude towards the media and the difficulties it has caused, another instance has come to light. The club was at odds with television broadcaster TVNZ this year after unflattering comments in its coverage of Cullen Sport's bid to establish a Polynesian rugby team. Cullen Sport owns the Warriors.

Chief executive Mick Watson appears to be putting distance between himself and media. His mobile phone directs callers to email him. The Star Times did but received no reply. And although club CEO Spiro Tsiros did take a call, he failed to ring back to discuss the issue as promised.

The Warriors' problems with the New Zealand Herald continue after one of its photographers was marched from Ericsson Stadium by security guards at half-time during the South Sydney game two weeks ago. It followed a heated confrontation on June 23 between the photographer and Warriors media and marketing manager Matt Kenny. The photographer was asked at one point to step onto a balcony and repeat his comments.

Kenny is to be relieved of his media duties and is to be replaced by the experienced freelance writer Richard Becht, who has covered rugby league for the Star Times this year.

But Watson smoked the peace pipe with Radio Sport last week after taking exception to on-air comments by hosts. It was the third time in the past year that Watson had been upset by such incidents.

He met radio network boss Bill Francis early last week.

The pair talked through the issues in an "amicable and open" manner, Francis said. Earlier, Francis had said he intended to ensure contracts with the NRL and the club were honoured.

"No (commercial) arrangements are threatened," Francis said.

The Warriors have been languishing at the bottom of the ladder for most of the year and some senior players have even admitted to not knowing their position on the table.

While the bye this weekend lifted them above the Sea Eagles on the table they face a tough final five rounds. They are up against the Broncos, Dragons, Eels, Roosters and Bulldogs, and need a huge form reversal to avoid the wooden spoon.
