Raiders name extended bench for Eels

The CFMEU Canberra Raiders have named 19 players for Monday nights clash against the Parramatta Eels, with Troy Thompson and Brett Kelly added to the team which lost to the Wests Tigers on Sunday afternoon.
Forward Trevor Thurling has been named in the side despite sustaining a knee injury against the Tigers and will receive the results of a scan on his knee as early as this afternoon.
Raiders Coach David Furner said the extended squad has been named to cover the chance of Thurling missing a week and said the team showed early in the match against the Tigers they can match it with the form teams.
“Trevor was unable to go back on the field on Sunday after hyper extending his knee so we have a couple of options on the bench if he’s unable to play,” Furner said. “We showed in the first half what we were capable of and although we had some opportunities in the second half we didn’t capitalise on them and we need to learn how to turn these into points.”
Furner said the team would work further this week on developing the halves combination of Josh McCrone and Terry Campese, while big forward Tom Learoyd-Lahrs is expected to get more game time on Monday night.
“Josh needs to work on his communication with Campo and we’ll work on that more this week as a couple of passes went loose, but I’m confident he has the ability to do the job for the team,” he said. “A fit Tommy Learoyd-Lahrs is going to be very valuable to the side, its only his second game back and he knows he can be better. He struggled a bit during the game but I’m confident he’ll be right to go again this week.”

Kelly didnt play for SL last week because he was in Canberra on standby for the match.

Basically same team , keeping the faith and hopefully redeeming themselves against the Eels.

furner is clueless.

relocate the club to the central coast, perth or papua new guinea. The club is sinking fast.

Geez how long do they need. McCrone and Campo played with each other for most of last season and 3 games this season.

That's more than Ray Thompson with the Cowboys and Tim Smith with the Sharks combined.

I almost broke my coffee table during the Tigers game but i'm over it now. I'm putting it down to Beni's greaness, putting it behind me and moving on to this game.

Kelly and Troy Thompson have got to go. Thompson's the last piece of dead wood left from the Elliott era. He should never play for the Raiders again. Kelly's just Boogs 2010.

We've got to stop kicking on early tackles. It's not helping at all. If we had a steadying influence in the 7 this wouldn't be happening. I'm hoping we can somehow get M. Monaghan back. As others have said, McCrone would make a good 5/8 at another club.

Shillington's an Origin starter this year. This I have no doubt of. He may even start for Australia in the ANZAC test.

I'd like to see Joel Thompson in the backrow ASAP. We can then slot Vidot into centre and maybe bring a guy like Low up to first grade. How's he going at the moment btw? I don't want to see Mogg in the backline.

We also need to get another dummy half in the side. How's Buttriss going? Tongue aint cutting it for the full 80.

Stuart's borderline. Needs a good game this weekend to restore my full confidence in him.

I know what you mean mate.

I kinda view Raiders games over the last couple of years a little like that bloke Burnie from the movie weekend at Burnies.

Trevor Thurling was cleared of any medial damage to his knee and will start off the bench.

Miller goes through mill in fitness bid

Experienced lock Josh Miller is making a late bid to return to the Raiders' line-up for Monday's clash with the Eels at Parramatta Stadium.

Miller put his injured shoulder through a gruelling defensive session at the Raiders' Bruce headquarters yesterday, raising hopes he would play for the first time since round one.

The 27-year-old told The Canberra Times a fitness test on Sunday was likely to determine his chances of taking on the Eels.

Having Miller back on deck would be a timely boost for the Raiders, who lacked composure in surrendering an 18-point lead during last week's loss to the Tigers.

Last year's joint winner of Canberra's player of the year award would add valuable leadership to the young Raiders.

1. Our backline defence was shot after JT went into the pack. Leave him at centre until JM is back or Mogg is fit

Buttriss has been injured. Not sure on his return.

James Stuart was everyone's love child after we beat Brisbane. He hasn't dropped as many bombs as Vidot!
