Geez how come we are always near the 2nd tier salary cap limit. We need to start picking the right 25 man squad.

Interesting to see who will go. The changes to the comp for next year suck imo. You would think the likes of Williams and Rothery are certain to go but with the numbers quoted there will be decisions made on potential rather than current form. I guess I am alluding to someone like Logan as opposed to Thurling etc. Logan has been great but could face the axe with the problems we have, depending on how much he is receiving. I would add Howell and Bickerstaff to the list without any hesitation and then there are guys like Raston. Wouldn't like to be a fringe first grader in my early 20's at the moment.

I would say the following players are gone:

Bickerstaff
Williams
Rothery
Hinchliffe
Howell
Raston
Thurling
Sau

Hinchcliffe should be retained IMO , he looks to be a handy player that can handle FG , the rest I cant despute as this U20 comp is gonna change things, Who are the two players they want , what positions?

I want Thurling to stay as well but he doesn't seem to be in Henry's plans at the moment.

In light of the under 20's the first grade squad should be increased to 30 and the cap raised 500k.

I think we have to retain Scotty Logan for another year and see how he holds up after that.
Bickerstaff is 31 32???He might be released or announce his retirement after these string of injuries.
We have to keep Thurling no matter what.

Bickerstaff never really impressed me at the Dragons, I dont see the need to hold onto him given how injury prone he is.

Scott Logan on the other hand should definately be given an option to go around again. Most of the best front rowers in the game are getting on in years.

So basically we are shedding up to 14 players this year and signing up to 3

Already gone

Frawley the #### How is he playing this week, he will stub his toe on the airplane and break a nail
Lomu
Irwin
Pamatangi

Dunneman Retired

Should go

Bickerstaff
Howell
Williams
Raston
Rothery

That still leave 4 other players potentially

Players likely

Campese
Thurling
Jones
Sau

They had better not let Campo go

I think almost everyone would agree with that, but when we have Carney, Purtell and Graham back he will almost certainly go to the bench.

I'm guessing he'll have the chance to impress in the centre's when Carney comes back, so the pressure will then be on Purtell and Graham to force him out.

I think we're jumping to conclusions a bit with the "9 fringe first graders" comment. I certainly don't expect anywhere near all of the players that are cut to be those who have played first grade this season. You need to remember that cutting players under contract for 2008 (such as Campese, Rothery, Bickerstaff, Thurling, Raston etc) won't actually help us at all when it comes to keeping under the salary cap (unless another club agrees to take up the full value of the outstanding component of their contract with us - according to Ian Schubert and the NRL).

Craig Frawley is the perfect example - he has been released but a big proportion of his salary is still counted in our salary cap - so cutting players who are still under contract next year doesn't help us at all as we still have to pay them. It's clear the likes of Williams, McLean and Hinchcliffe are probably on borrowed time and then you've got the older blokes in PL like Henare and the Grintells etc who are probably on short term contracts which are unlikely to be renewed. It's true there may be a few blokes released to other clubs like Raston and Rothery (and Howell?) who don't seem to be in Henry's plans for the future, but I certainly don't expect to see a mass exodus of players who have featured for us in first grade this year.

What happens to the blokes in our top 25 who do not make the first seventeen each week? Where do they play?

Will Canberra be entering a team in the premier league equivalent comp the NSWRL is setting up? If so that's where they'll be playing.

The New South Wales Rugby League will use the emergence of the National Under-20s competition (Toyota Cup) as an opportunity to create an independent open-aged competition focusing on returning top level Rugby League to suburban grounds.

In the months that the National Under-20s has been in planning, the NSWRL has canvassed a range of options for its competitions structure, ranging from new opportunities at the Under-16 and Under-18 level, and an open-aged competition that will recapture the spirit of traditional clubs battling it
out on a weekly basis.

Clubs such as Wests, Balmain, Newtown, Auckland and Norths have indicated their desire to be involved in this standalone competition - which will replace the VB Premier League - and a majority of NSW National Rugby League clubs have indicated their involvement through a joint venture method or otherwise.

The advent of the new open-aged competition, the expansion of the junior representatives and the niche-filling Jim Beam Cup competition will see the NSWRL provide opportunities for every level of footballer;

* The best Under-16s Harold Matthews and Under-18s SG Ball teams to compete with their Queensland counterparts for "National champion" status from 2008 onwards, with the added incentive of potential selection in Australian U16 and U18 sides to play New Zealand each year.

* The open-aged competition to provide the best players outside NRL level, playing at local and traditional venues which will often be vacated due to NRL away games.

* A semi-professional Jim Beam Cup competition that gives players an opportunity to play at the best of their abilities without the requirement of full-time commitment.

"We've been given a chance to streamline our competitions and further improve the pathways we already have for kids wanting to progress through to elite level football," NSWRL General Manager Geoff Carr said.

"We had feedback from many clubs that a credible open-aged competition is very important, and with the Toyota Cup, in most cases, providing the only fixture prior to an NRL clash, there is a real opportunity to develop this competition through playing stand-alone fixtures and double-headers.

"If games are programmed correctly, we can take advantage of situations where, for instance, Wests Tigers might be playing away, so a Wests versus Balmain clash could be scheduled at Leichhardt Oval - to provide credible suburban football to Sydney rugby league fans."

"The Jim Beam Cup was never intended to breach the gap between an Under-20s and open-aged competition - it is a unique competition with a $150,000 salary cap that is designed to ensure teams are not stacked."

In conclusion, the NSWRL will now allow a period of time for clubs to complete negotiations for joint ventures, before finalising its competitionstructures.

To further illustrate that rugby league has become a business, take a look at the scenario for next season. Premier league will be replaced by a national under-20s competition.
When fans go along to a Raiders' game at Canberra Stadium in 2008, they will see the under-20s followed by the first-grade game.
So far this season, the Raiders have put on the field 29 players in first grade. Next year the club will look at having 32 or 33 players contracted full time.
Any player who doesn't make the squad and is over the age of 20, will play for South Logan in Queensland or a Sydney club in the Jim Beam Cup.
The Raiders have virtually no players, in their current squad of 25, unsigned for next season.
The major focus for the Raiders with signing players will probably be next season as a number of players are coming off contract at that time.

They still have not come to terms with a sydney club talk was that it was bulldogs and tigers.

So at this point it is only South Logan where there is an agreement with.

I think alot of other NRL clubs will snap up our fringe first graders who would like to get released,i dont think the likes of rothery, williams, raston, howell will have trouble finding another nrl club, but they will also be fighting for a spot in any nrl top squad.

What a stupid decision by the club!

Unless they can find a suitable place for the players who are in the first grade squad outside the top 17 to play, no player will ever come to Canberra due to the uncertain nature of where they will be playing on a weekly basis.

They coudl be in firsts one week and off to Souths Logan the next and vice versa. What a f**k up by management!

As I said they are trying to get a sydney jim beam side to pick up cost's of players match fee's and travel expense's to play in sydney.

They where talking to tigers as magpies are fielding there own team and where talking to bulldogs this was months ago, But seeing as though there has been no announcement we are stuck with two options

Bere the cost of players and send them to sydney jim beam cup only and qld cup

Bere the cost and send the to qld cup and if no spot for them don't have to pay match fee's or travel cost's

Which one works out cheaper ?
