Raiders name squad to tackle Broncos

17 Feb, 2009

The CFMEU Canberra Raiders have named a 27 man squad for their first official NRL trial of 2009, as they prepare to take on the Brisbane Broncos at Redcliffe Oval on Saturday night.

All of the Raiders new recruits will take part in the match, with New Zealand forward Bronson Harrison and former Roosters Prop David Shillington both expected to make an impact.

Coach David Furner said the Green Machine would use two forward packs for the clash against the Broncos and would also give some of the Raiders junior players the chance to impress.

"We're going to have a situation where we rotate two forward packs,” Furner said. "We also have an opportunity for two young guys in Jarrod Croker and Daniel Vidot to play against some physical opposition.”

Furner said the teams pre-season had been strong and expected this to be reflected in the trial, while the chance to impress ahead of round one would be a big motivator for all of the team.

"The players are ready, they're ready for the trials and it's a chance for them to put their best foot forward,” he said. "This is an opportunity to impress, we have a lot of healthy competition for positions, and it's exciting for both the players and the coaches.”

With the four quarter system in play for the match Furner said he would also rotate players within the backs, and expected his chief playmakers to all take charge at various stages of the match.

"The game is also a chance for Josh McCrone, Marc Herbert and Terry Campese to have a starting role of some sort in those quarters.”

With 27 players set to take the field on Saturday night Furner said the side would be culled for the Raiders second trial a week later, but there would still be the chance to impress for the whole squad.

"I'll probably look for an 18-20 man squad for the second match,” he said. "The guys that don't play in that Bulldogs trial will play in the match for our feeder club Souths Logan and they will be there so we can have a look at them as well.”

Decent sized squad! Bit pissed I didn't get a run. :p

In all seriousness though, it will be a massive game for Flanagan, Buttriss, McCrone and Herbert - not to mention Graham.

Looks like youre the only one not playing Chachi , maybe next week:)

I hope we dont suffer any injuries , I would really like if Graham could get the full season in , I think he's an integral part of our team.

I thought TLL could play 2 trial games?

Yeah, I think Furner's holding me back for the big games!

TLL is allowed to play the Souths Logan trial games, not the NRL ones. It's a bit of a bonus really.

You're right about the injuries though. Lets hope Lasscock is the only one we lose this year.

I'm with you guys...Hopefully phil has recovered completely from his knee injury and has a stella season. We really missed him out wide last year.

Ok , i thought he still could play in 1 NRL sanctioned trial , anyway hope he gets some time on the field in SL trial.

We may not necessary win tonight , I think running so many combinations may disrupt the team this week , but I dont care if we win this one its from round 1 I care about.

He was probably caught sleeping on his verandah after a good night out or some sh*t.

although furner being an ex pig himself would understand the rigours and plight of the player a little better than that imbecile neville we had as coach last year...

So maybe an injury??..f**k knows really.

I'm thinking the no. 9 battle is rightfully between Buttriss and Flanagan at this stage.

We've got a new coach and a few new players so I think it's hard enough to get the combinations right over one or two games let alone having three different hookers and two different halfbacks come in for a few minutes here and there.

I'm sure he'll get his chance - he's just not the first cab off the rank right now.

We could get flogged in this game simply because our team will be all over the shop whereas Brisbane seem to be using it as more of a serious run in into the season.

BTW there was a story in the Canberra Times saying Tongue will be out for a few weeks with a fractured thumb, which he did in training. He should be right for Round 1, but he will miss the trials.

Apparently Josh Miller will be starting at lock (!) and Fensom will get his chance too.

Just imagine a forward pack of:

8. Shillington (115 kg)
9. Buttriss
10. Tilse (112 kg)
11. Learoyd-Lahrs (if he was playing) (115 kg)
12. Harrison (102 kg)
13. Miller (99 kg)

(All weights from last season's guide)

Quite possibly the biggest (and probably slowest) in NRL history!

Tonguey was just on ABC radio (or should that be Raidio?) confirming he's out for the pre-season.

He said that preseason training has been enjoyable this year as Furner knows what it's all about and they're not doing things just for the sake of it. Focus has been on high intensity for shorter bursts. They're looking forward to the season with a few changes to the gameplan, building on what Henry has done over the last few years.

He also expected the trial will be hard to get any real combinations together with the team being mixed up over 4 quarters (practically 4 different teams each quarter), although you always go into the game wanting to win. He was expecting it to be a good hitout for the new recruits, Shillington, Harrison and Flanagan.

It wouldn't be that slow Buttriss can go, Harrison used to be a back and is pretty quick for a forward, Miller has great "leg speed" as Daley would say and Lars is no slouch for a forward imo.....Tilse is tho :p

Gotta love the good ol' 'leg speed'! So much better than that overrated 'arm speed' crapola.

Nothing wrong with the pace of that forward pack
Thurling, Miller, Tongue, Harrison and Smokin Joe have all good good pace for their positions
TLL is probably one of the quickest front rowers in the game

Indeed, but I didn't include Thurling, Tongue or Picker for that reason. ;-)
